Who is in favor of dropping the minimum depth to 15 feet?
I feel it would give the judge a bit longer to look at the kit and get a better feel for the quality of the break.(spotting axles)

Do we need to clarify your post from "Dropping" to "Raising"? Or I have been reading the minimum suggested depth standard of 10 feet wrong? LOL!

Nothing will change with most judges. Show me specifically, unquestionably or undeniably what 15 feet is at 300 ft and I'll tell you that you are full of shit. And guess who will be right :)

The rate of fall should not be based on a feet measurement. It should be based on time. Time is undesputable.

Brian / Joe, do you use the formula 32 ft/s2 or is the descent a little slower?

John, Birds drop at different rates depending on their velocity however 15 foot in a second is about the avarage and as they go deeper they go a bit faster. Joe

I agree with BMC. Instead of trying to measure distance; timing the duration of the spin may be the most sound. I am also in agreement with Joe U. that depth may be dependent on velocity. I have watched many kits fly and it appears that the higher the velocity of spin the slower the decent. I would like a to see a study done on this by someone smarter than me.

Brians right.. duration is the most valuable tool we have.. you can't estimate actual depth.

Kenny,
Personally, I would be in favor of raising the minimum depth standard to 15 feet in the 20 bird fly and 20 feet in the 11 bird fly, for the reasons you mentioned. If all goes well, raise it again in 5 years until we have reached a limit where participation starts to decline. We need to keep standards as high as possible but we must pay for this somehow. A delicate balance must be kept in mind.

I don't know, the charter members of the hairy chested roller club and assorted knuckle draggers would be so happy because they want deeper, bigger brakes because it "SOUNDS" better..... Than the reality of most birds scored are 10-20 foot X wingers? IMHO

I am not disagreeing with you at all. I feel most guys need to learn depth by using a stop watch. Once you get a handle on 3/4 to 1 sec, in most cases a bird will fall around 10 feet. I strive for 2 second birds, as my lowest time allowed, in the kit. And to me that is not a real deep bird. Deep, is birds hitting in the 3-4 seconds range and good ones are far and few between. But that is just my birds and my depth estimates.
