Whats the difference between a muff legged roller and a clean legged roller? Does the clean legged roller perform better then a muffed roller? The reason I ask is I attended a roller show that was billed as for performing rollers and a fellow entered a muff and the judge said to everyone "if you have muffed birds dont bother entering because I will not pick a muffed roller so save your $3 dollers"
I thought that if the bird performed and is a Birmingham Roller then thats all that that matters.
Thanks

George, On page 169 of the Hatcher book 'The Last Of The Greats And The Next Generation' Bill Pensom wrote a letter to Hugo Blass and discussed muffed birds. Pensom told Hugo to get a Smith cock from someone named Bolling and "keep it, and to never mind the muffs as you don't see any bad muffed ones". Then he offers Hugo a little muffed 'Champion' hen if he wants it.
I read another article by Pensom somewhere where he advised someone to nevermind the muffs as they were all that way at one time.
Sounds like the judge just doesn't like muffed birds for some reason.

George sounds like a judge that shouldnt have been judging, the Smith's carried muffs as did many other line's,as for the good muffs they look just like any other good spinner and he should have reconized that, that's to bad

Sounds like its the same judge that moved my bird from 3rd to 4th after looking at the bands. Seemed like he was judging the bands and not the birds.

I have a lavender cock that is a muff and he rolls pretty damn good for rollers not having muffs. I got the cock from Chuck Roe..he has quite a few good spinners with muffed legs.

I have some birds that are Higgins + Hatcher that are muffed. I will put them against anybodys birds for performance. Muffs don't have any effect on performance. I think they look pretty good on a bird myself.
