----------Just wondering...What is the oldest bird (outside of a breeder) that you have in your competition kit box? I say 'outside of a breeder' as I realize some fly their breeders on off season. Thank you in advance for your response.

I currently have an 11 year old cock bird in the A-team, but he was starting to show his age a little in the fall. Hopefully he will be rested up after this winter's lockdown.

Bruce,
I had an 03 Blue Check self in my A kit until this spring. One day this spring, I noticed that she came ripping out of the kit with great speed, style and was about 30'. I knew she had great style, speed and depth before but she was infrequent. This year her frequency got much better so I pulled her after the WC prelims and bred some really nice spinning young out of her. She has survived 6+ years of BOP attacks so she must have some savvy. She was out of my best pair from 03 and her nest mate has been a stock bird since she was 2.

Two to five years old is the makeup of the present older Bird kit. I had some that were older but lost them when I moved and reflew which was my fault. Not as many cocks make it in the older kit for long periods of time.

I'm same as Brad .. 2-5 years old but will start working in a few 09s starting next month or so.

Joe .. it amazes me how some older birds start hitting another gear .. and many times they will show you something that youngbirds just aren't capable of in speed/Quality and work rate .. I'm not talking that quick trigger slight unstable type either... I find these to come out of some what stiffer birds that just showed you enough to keep on the property.. they can be true gems no doubt.

Well I currently have a bunch of 09 birds but the last true Ateam I had was a mixture of four 5 year old birds, four 4 year old birds three 3 year ols and the reast 2 year olds. Truely miss watching that group of birds but I will get there again. Joe

Do judges, judge different from a old bird team and a young bird team? I have all 09 birds and its going to take some time to get a solid old bird team.

I dont know about any body else Larry but I cant see the bands once the birds are in the air.LOL. The birds just tend to be more consistant. I can usually tell in just a couple minutes if I am scoring a young bird team or an old bird team.

My a-team is made of 2-6 yr olds. About 1/2 are 2 yrs, the rest older. There is one '03 cock that didnt produce what I wanted so he is a permanent kitbird.

Jon...an excellent point...we breed performing rollers...and just because he/she doesn't produce as good/better young, doesn't mean they are worthless. Some excellent flyers do not produce equal to or better than the parents, but still are great performers. Blessed is the fancier that can get both qualities in the same bird. Bruce

I am flying one 8 year old hen in my team. She has survived every obstacle nature and I can throw at her and is about a 1.4 quality spinner with decent frequency. She is of stockable quality but not for me at this time based on what I have in my stock pen to work out of. 3 years ago the average age of my top team was 3-4 years old. But as the BOP situation has worsened here in Vegas it is down to about 1 1/2 to 2 years old and those are on lock down right now. The longer you can keep the nucleus of a good team together the better they will be as a team. When Hannes Rousow was here judging my team for the World Cup Finals he told me his team has been together about 5 years in the making. I wish I could keep 1/2 my team together year over year now that the falcon is here 9 to 10 months a year instead of 3 months! Enjoy your next fly! Don M. LVRC
