Whats up everyone... just wanted to get some info on time of the year to start breeding. I live in N. Cali and I plan to start breeding the first of the year. What time of the year do you breed, and why ? What area do you live in also. Thanks

Hey Rick, I had the same problem last year also. Late rolling birds and the hawk showed up . Im intersted to see these late birds this year .. but i would rather test the young and get a get a head start.. than to fly to early and lose a good late bloomer.

Larry,

I just put my pairs together...but I usually start the first week of Jan....but Mookie ran into some issues and basically has to start from scratch..so I put my pairs together and he gets the first round and no charge..I felt bad for him...they were together a couple weeks ago..

I pair-up the weekend after Valentines day. By the time babies are fledging the weather is warm enough they usually survive. Also the days are getting long enough. I still run lights for my breedrs before pairing them about 20 days. If I dont extend the photoperiod they wont pair up and lay in sync with one another and I end up with babies of all ages to try and train together. Also, with longer days, I have time to work young birds, trap training etc. after work. I'll still be flying a couple of kits of last years young that need development time too.

I would usally put my pairs down on thanxgivin day,, However this year I am in the process of putting down a few pairs now. I wont need to breed as many as last year because I have about 37 holdovers. The pairs I have down should Be "Super" not really lookin at comp this year based on personal reasons,,, However will still be the regional RD here in 9I and support the bro's as much as possible... Been flying my birds for acouple of months now and am really impressed with the performance. They are really fun to watch,,, It's wierd because I have been rollin bird here for about 4years and have the same neibhors in amazement when I fly my birds..The other day one of my birds let loose 40ft+ just beyond my back fence.. it was one of those rolls that you could only wish someone other than yourself seen....and as I peerd over the fence the bird flew up and there was my neibhor and a few people that got their eye's busted... My neibhor said he tryed to catch it but it stopped about 5 feet from the ground... Priceless..1 I spent the next 45min explaining thease special birds we raise....

For years I put pairs together on thanksgiving day and always had young in the nest on Xmas. I have changed that the last couple years due to the preditors staying later into the spring. I have since started pairing up the first week in January. Later but I dont have to contend with the preditors taking the young birds as they are liberated or holding them in and they get to strong on the wing and then you have to contend with fly offs. Either way you loose birds that you dont want to. Joe

For me here in north central kansas i will pair up late march. I was going to try and breed earlier but it wouldn't be worth it due to the cold and bops. Some friends of mine have birds on eggs allready. I need to move. Jim Bowen

Jim,
I'm pretty close to you in timing, usually start putting pairs together in early to mid-March. Last year I tried to start earlier and just lost too many youngsters during the cold snaps. Plus I think it is hard on the breeders. Ron Harrison breeds all winter long but lost his best hen and two youngsters earlier this month when it got down below 0.

Hi Larry, Glad you are enjoying your birds. There is a good record behind Mr. Dayton. I cant wait to see your birds in early summer flying.

I wait to pair up until the last week of Feb or within the first two weeks in March. I find that the coopers are moving around in spring staking out nest sites and want a good food source for their young. So I pair up when the wild birds are back from migration.

That way I am training my first round the same time the Robins, black birds and such are raising thier first round as well. The BOP will leave me alone if they have several young wild birds to eat just learning to fly from the nest.

As you know, I like older birds to compete with so I never have a need to breed early to try and get alot of air time in them before fall. I think I have it worse in spring than fall with BOP because of the young birds in training. Once they catch a young pigeon they come back again and again but they quickly lose interest in older birds when they have young robins, doves, bluejays and mocking birds, all of which I have plenty of around here in late March and April. Good luck to you, comming in fourth place in the local prelims for the fall fly! That is impressive for a guys flying his first year. Bill C
