Do rollers occasionally go flat ? (stop rolling) what do you do to bring the roll back ? Why do they go flat?

I am not an expert however I heard from experience roller fanciers that if the kit is in top performance(rolling & kitting well) and you continue to fall everyday then it will take out roll from them, so basically fly day1 rest day-2 and continue to do that. I also know that some fanciers even rest the kit for 2 or 3 days in row and then fly.

Don't let your birds eat any corn. It will shut down the roll in some families of rollers. Feed more milo than wheat to weaken them so the resistance to roll is lessened. Steve S.

Steve, what should be fed in the winter in cold climates? If the birds are shut down from Oct-March and fed corn for the BTU's, will this cause them to go flat? And if they do, what must be done to get them back into condition, or is it too late by then?

Terry, It gets real cold here in Ohio and I feed corn also the pop corn type. I feed it only in extreme cold temperatures. I use a good mix of 1/3 each canadian peas, red wheat and Milo. The fat that corn puts on the birds is hard to get off but I have found that a good high protein mix will keep them through the winter. It is a matter of flying them into shape after a lock down by cutting the feed to 1/2 wheat and milo and once in a while adding peas for a boost. If I have some sluggish birds that fight the roll I use more milo than wheat.I have had to use millet to get em up higher in the air. During the molt I use flax seeds or wheat germ oil on the mix to help with the feathers during moult. It takes (YOU) to figure out what (Your) family reacts to best but what I do is a good starting tool. Hope this helps. Steve Sissel

Real simple to get them in shape after winter lockdown, put them on straight milo for couple of weeks and you will see the difference.
