What is your oppinion of Norm Reed birds? Not from somebody else but pure Norm Reed birds from the man himself. What have you experienced with them? Honestly

A freind of mine has some Norm Reed birds and they are great in the air. He has several strains and he ranks the Norm Reed birds near the top. I hope this helps!

Big Willy, I have five pairs from Norm. I got them earlier this year, but I have not flown any young due to bop.
I will pair them up in january 2010 and fly there young. I will let you know how the young perform.

This was my first year really working with them. I flew the shhh out of them and maybe even overworked them at times. However, I did notice that have extreme velocity, kitting ability is great, and they will give you big breaks.

I did not get to c them give me their full potential because of a couple of significant reasons. The most significant is the fact that I fly directly behind a fwy. The birds are constantly diving into the fwy. I mean sometimes it get so bad they dont even fly high. This is most of the time. This causes them not go into one(spin) because they are worried about hitting

I am hoping that when these birds are older they will be a site to watch and the birds and I will get our sshh 2gether

With any family you start you have to work with them. You will not get good results just by the name or following the name. Fly them hard is the only way. There are many that fly the Norm Reed birds and not all do the same.

AK
You stated ..."My Pure Norm Reed birds are Awesome. The key is to know how to Breed them For Performance."
That is a pretty broad statement...Can you be more specific....it sounds like you have more insite to this line of birds specifically.

All my birds are the from the same family bloodline, I've been focusing on my best Performing birds I have and been weeding out birds that are not really top notch to me and i've been pairing only my quality birds up, after they have already proven themselves to me in the air, what happens here is that I am trying to build my own line. I fly all my birds then select my best birds to stock usually after the second molt most birds start to kick in at their best. Im just breeding 4 pairs of my very best birds right now. My Cocks and hens and breeders are all seperated. I get advice from Norm and close friends with that family bloodline that has been getting Quality birds that Norm has produced over the years old and new stuff because we all have the same family. This system has been working for me, but everyone has their own way of doing things, I hope this info may help you out a little..

my set small and simple

my set up

thanks Ak~

I have a question? What is the difference between Norm Reeds "old family and new family".
I have read it here before about his new and old stuff, but have never understood it.
Did he change families or concentrate his efforts with certain birds within his "old family" to start his "new family".
Any input is appreciated.
Thanks

There is no difference. They are all the same birds. Norm laughs at the guys that make comments on the new family and old. He says that they are all the same. If you look at thed ped you will c that all of the birds are in the peds just not up close

Ive been able to fly somewhat. Im noticing that the birds are flying higher and the fwy seems not to b an issue. For now. The birds are showing me some good action, speed, not as deep as I want. But I know its coming. Got hit by a falcon I think wednesday so I locked back down. Trying to save them for the upcoming shows.

This year these birds are expected to show there a-- off. For real

AK No disrespect to Norm as he is a legend. That cock bird you posted is eithter a hen ready to lay or a bird that has rolled down. Just my opinion. Jim Bowen.

Jim and Scott, I agree. There is something that just doesn't look right with that bird.

Scott and Jim, I am fairly new into the rollers and am trying to learn as much as possible about good performing rollers.
Can you tell me why or what makes this bird look weak in the back or what makes it look not right?

I am not trying to stir the pot, or put down someones bird. I am just curious and wanting to learn.
Thanks

Polar - what is wrong with stirring the pot?(LOL) The wings should not only be carried on top of the tail, but at its shoulders the wing should be elevated above the back. When a hen is egging its back will appear elevated above the wing. The tail also looks wrong in its carriage, but that may be due to when the picture was taken and what the bird was doing at that time.

I know you didn't ask me, but I am the one who said the bird just don't look right. Now, Jim and Scott along with me cannot give you a value of the birds performance without watching it fly.

Polar.. the tail should line with the back... back muscles is what carries it ..control and bumping generaly are the result given time.

polarbear it just could be a bad picture. The bird looks like a eggy hen but that may be just the picture. Keep in mind though that birds that display this type of stance are generally weak in the back or have rolled down and bumped. The bird could be a champ my friend it could just be the picture. Anybody flying birds from Norms bloodline care to share what feed has worked best for them on a young bird kit?

I have a very nice Reed cock bird and two hens. I flew a kit and pick the best to breed. After a year plus of flying I pulled the cock bird and the two hens. And I still have a cock bird in my primary (A TEAM) team. He is part of the top three in that kit. The only reason I believe he isn't #1, is cause he has a slightly larger build than the rest of the kit. But never the less he doesn't miss a beat, and always delivers 30-40 ft. These 4 birds break twice a minute, no less. I did not breed these birds. They have a high level of velocity in there spin and the quality of roll is high. I will try to breed them a bit smaller, because I feel that would make them even better. I have seen smaller pure Reed birds, just not in the air. Well, not a 2 or 3 year old kit. This winter I will breed them pure strictly out of these 2 pair with foster's. Come February 2011 I will add my own twist to the gene pool. And compare the two.
