Articles such as this being used "today" really baffle me,here let me give you a line from the late Cornel Norwood since generally it's a few in his circle of followers that are allways more than willing to point out such out of date articals,"I believe that kit competion is playing a large part in this detrimental movement" I have even seen such misimformation on someones homepage pointing how the NBRC is leading the Birmingham to distruction due to competition, the fact is when Pensom (and Cornel) wrote about competition being detrimental to the Birmingham they were 100 0/0 correct, here's the kicker though, they were being flown under competion tumbler rules, meaning that all they had to do was flip over at once in a turn,no standard as far as qaulity or depth was needed and obviously the true Birmingham was no doubt at a real disadvantage and in order to win one would no doubt have to breed short and frequent birds,in other words tumblers,so you ask why am I baffled when particular individuals throw out such articals and how competition is detrimental to the Birmingham, thats an easy one to explain "WE DONT FLY UNDER THOSE RULES" the rules as they are written today specificly state "that the birds must roll a 10 ft min. "this is a compition for rollers and not tumblers" on top of the raw score there are multipliers for both qaulity and depth,so on top of the min standard for both, they can be awarded heavily above the raw score for truely outstanding qaulity and depth up and above the raw score, there are no serious competiters out there that I know of that are breeding towards frequent medicore birds, who the hell "wants" them? As for what "competition" is doing for the hobby,we now have an international fly that involves seven or so countrys, all split into regions, these regions then detimine the qaulifiers and "one" judge travels these countrys judging the top kits out of the regions, the NBRC has give or take 2,500 members, never in history have we had that kind of membership and enthusisim, along with a national fly that flys under the same guidelines as the world Cup,now tell me Pensom wouldnt be in awe over the progress that this breed has made.
Now for the final note, both Pensom and Cornel, made note of thier fear of competion "as long there is no standard and flying under competion AS IT IS" well now "there" is a standard and the better and deeper the birds the more they are awarded, as for myself, never have I stocked anyting than my best hardest spinning birds,"turns" are like depth, they mean nothing without qaulity!!,personaly I would think that the oldtimers would be proud.
Scott Campbell
Vally Springs,
PS if any of you are in N. Calif. we will be flying our regional for the World Cup May 1st,the judge will be Dave Moseley out of England,Daves an accomplished flier and should be a first rate judge of the "Birmingham Roller"
