A few months ago I received a stock cock from a friend out of the old Plona/Smith line. This bird is on the large side but has good type, good muscle, and is as light as a feather like balsa wood. Supposedly breeds a high percentage of stock quality birds. But..., I don't like large birds. (He might have ballooned up as an adult but he still must have been a big bird when he was flying)

Would be curious to hear if anyone would use a cock like this as his only apparent fault is being large.

Russ if he's truely a prepotent cock forget about his size, some larger cocks my not breed large and as you mentioned he may have blown up once stocked, many of my cocks once stocked will get bigger, does he just look big on the perch ? but in hand doesnt feel big ? some birds are decieving,if he has the motor and everything is proportion and passes such along you can allways breed away from him,in other words only breed out of the smaller than him offspring and not take anything back towards him(daughters)

Russ,

I too have a Plona/Smith Cock that is large, but feels very light. His offspring are nice small; thin birds.

The bird stands up tall is the only way I can describe it.

Russ,
My input would be to breed him to a small typie hen that can do it in the air. Raise a few rounds and see what developes. Don't let appearence sway your thinking, These are flying birds not show birds. JMHO

Russ, one of my foundation cocks (994 out of Sal Estrada's Homer Corderre family) was a blue bar, a bit on the large side.

I would put him on an average size hen and the hens would come out a nice average size for a hen but the cocks tended to be a bit larger like the father.

But they could roll and were real "typy" which I like. Just try'em on a hen or two and see what you can get. Let the offsprings performance in the air make the decision for you. FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Thanks to all for your input!
I have selected a couple very small typie hens that had small good spinning fathers as mates for the large cock. What I am hoping to achieve is that the cock will pass on his 'pre-potency' to offspring that are smaller and better type than he is. If I happen to get some smaller to medium cocks that have the 'package' that will be great! However, I do think that the size of the hens may increase from the large cock. Anyway, size aside, it's all about the roll.
Thanks!
