I was wondering is it ok to feed your standard mix for the breeding pairs. I use a 15.5% protein mix...peas (white), peas (black looking), pop corn, wheat milo, and some skinny white looking grain. Is that OK. My young are very healthy and the birds are very active. I just want to make sure I am doing it right. Also, How much should I feed. I feed twice a day morning and evening, I feed just enough to when the hens switch with the cocks for sitting that they pretty much finish the feed up. In the evening it is less then the morning and they finish up in about 15 minutes of eating. Just a little help. I do not have a kit yet, but I do fly the breeders in the morning for about 20minutes and then call them in with the whistle and they all trap...no hanging out. I know you are not supposed to fly the breeders, but they only fly for 20mins and that is it. Plus all my birds are new and I am still trying to find out who rolls and who does not. The birds seem happy about flying, they have a routine of 20 minutes and the whistle and trap. Any suggestions would be great!

Hey Paul
If you look on page 2 of this message board you'll see the heading "Feeding for performance" Which may answer a lot of your questions.

Hi Paul, As your post says you are looking for a good feed for breeders even though you fly your breeders. The mix you explained is what we here in Southern Ohio call scratch feed. Wheat-Milo-field peas -Canadian peas ,popcorn and oats with the hulls on them. If you remove the popcorn you will see your birds will get stronger and fly higher. I have tried a mix like this but I have found a better mix to raise youngsters and they are more healthy and with more body muscle and are all around better looking and performing young rollers. It is 1/4 small chicken layer pellets 1/4 Red Wheat and 1/4 Milo and 1/4 high protein peas either the vetch type or the trapper peas. The chicken can be substituted with small turkey pellets. The chicken pellets have ,salt, vitimins and minerals, and medication for cocci, ecoli and samonella bacterias. Don't overdue the pellets as they cause loose droppings. Hope this helps it really works for me. Steve S.
