Here is a question submitted from Roy R. Does anyone have information that could assist him?
My quesion is, Does it matter if I use pressure treated wolminized wood? I used some on the pen where the birds can' really get to it, but I would like to use rot resistant pressure treated wood for the perchs but I'm worried that it might have ill affects on there feet/health ? What do you think? Hey man I have another question, I still need to build a outside hanging wall pen.
Have any pics or info on sputniks/traps made of light weight wire and wood? I can build one outta wire with a swinging door but then it would always be open or closed, I need a way so they get in but not out, unless I want.
Are sputniks open in the back? ( I only saw front pics) Can I build a sputnick into a wire pen? Maybe cut the back out? I'd rather build then buy.

why would you need pressure treated perches ? no I would never use it in the loft,it contains to many chemicals,as for traps there are many things you can use Bobs being only one,I know quite a few that use modified foof Jacks, but what ever you use you must be able to close it up to keep the critters out or you'll be playing Russion roulet,I use a hinged landing board that flip ups to close off my traps.

Pressure treated wood does not mold, rot and bugs like termites, carpenter ants and bee's won't eat it, pressure treated wood resists bacteria and lasts 5 times the amount of time as regular pine lumber, I also like it becasuse the grain seems to be tighter and less brittle due to the presssure treatment.
I found a country lumber yard here in Pennsylvania that sells bulk 3x4 pressure treated "land scape timbers" for a price comparable to regular pine 2x4's, I use them for everything that I can from electric fence posts to basic home improvements. I also like them because they withstand the abuse the pressure washer inflicts as I'm cleaning pens/cages I built with them, I keep chickens/guinnies and peafowl in them and never had a bad reaction. But pigeons seem to be more delicate and I am concerned, Just wonder if any one had any problems?
I don't know what a piano trap is and I'm interested to learn more, I never seen any kind of trap/loft besides on line pics. And that makes it kinda tough to build a nice loft..lol..
I can not put a trap on the roof, It's 30 feet or more above the top of the pigeon pen in the barn, I can build a ligtweight wire and wood release/recovery sun/bath pen on the outside barn wall and put small enter/exit holes threw the barn wall that would connect both pens very well.
I could use some ideas on the best way to build this outside pen and ways to trap them in and out. Pics and or plans would be ideal..
Thanks for your help it's very much appreciated.. Roy

Zinger being a building Contractor I have knowledge of Pressure treated material which is why I dont think that you should it in the loft, exspecially for perches where the birds will have direct contact to it at all times plus birds like pecking on things, the lofts needs to be completly dry so dry rot shouldnt be a problem, that is unless you are using dirt floors and posts sunk in the ground and what not and then of coarse pressure treated needs to be used in particular areas, thats my opinion

I agree with you Scott! Here in Quebec, the gov't has outlawed the use of pressure treated lumber for children's swingsets becuase of the chemicals used in treating the wood (cancer causer) It has been replaced for red cedar (more expensive but safer). If you do have to use pressure treated lumber, paint it REALLY well and seal in those chemicals! Wash your hands after working with it everytime too!! I mention this more for the loftsman's health and his family than for the birds!I use well painted plywood and sheets of tin and I keep it all really dry! Oh, and I also use standard bobs with a hinged landing board which I lock up at night as mentioned previously.
Terry's 2cents worth (that's like .03cents US :-)

Mother load that's great news that your a building Contractor that has knowledge of Pressure treated material, now please tell me why you dont think that you should use it in the loft, exspecially for perches, The manufacturer of the pressure treated lumber states on the label that it's "safe for playground, pet containment and vegetable garden use" So basically there telling me kids can play around it, my pets can be caged in it and I can safely grow my food in containers built of it. But you say I should not keep pigeons housed in it because of chemicals and I would like to know why? Is there a certain chemical/compound you know of that causes a particular illness/cancer or do you know of a certain case of pressure treated wood poisoning? What particular chemical do you think is a health hazard to my pigeons? (or me?).
THANKS FOR ALL THE INORMATION AND HELP!!!! Roy

Zinger in case your interested the, compounds that are used in most pressure treated wood in the USA is CCA it is Chromium,Copper and Arsenic,is this stuff deadly,no of coarse it isn't is it worth taking a chance with in "my" loft with "my" birds,NO it isnt, but then I dont need to use this type of material except for what it's intended to be used for as my loft has no excess moisture or bugs, now this was started on this forum as a question on whether it should be used for perches and I gave you "my" opinion and that opinion seems to offend you for some reason so you either are in that bus. or you allready bought the material, either way I dont care as I wouldnt even think of using it as perches in my own loft, again Zinger thats just my opinion

"compounds that are used in most pressure treated wood in the USA is CCA it is Chromium,Copper and Arsenic,"
This is some of the information I'm looking for, I can see if CCA is used in the wood I intend to buy and how much (if any) is in the wood that I have used, Thanks for that information, I don't know why you misunderstood me. I'm starting to understand you. ---------------------------------------- I can Roll when I Skydive so I know why they do it. It's great FUN.
