I am in the process of building new perches and nest boxes for my loft out of plywood. I would like to ask what would be the best to use as a finish to protect the timber as well as not being detremental to the birds health. Do you think it is best to just leave the timber bare. All comments would be appreciated. Thanks for your time. Matt

I like to paint everything other than perches,I use enamal, bare wood will absorb bacteria much easier,as for the perchas paint would last on them anyway due to scraping,on the nestboxes construct them for easy cleaning also, another note on this subject, BEWARE of the OSB (chipboard) material and if you "have" to use it paint it very well and dont use where moisture can get to it due to the glues and flormalhide (sp),it is also very moulds very easy which can cause havoc with your birds

Scott, I use OSB for the floors in the majority of my lofts and haven't had any problems, but I also treated the wood with Thompson's water sealer too and I live in a pretty dry climate. Brian.

Brian I dont think that useing it in moderation will hurt anything,I've used on the loft roofs, but I have known others that used it for "everything" and had problems where the suspect were these materals and I'm assuming that they didnt have proper ventalation also
