Wheat over the course of a couple of weeks wheat will push them up. Peas will do the same thing if given for an extended period of time, making them stronger which can result in longer and higher fly times. Lots of Millet will turn them into feathered bottle rockets too from my experience. Brian.

Rauf out of that list it's Barly, some use it to get thier youngbirds up and I believe that Tippler guys use it quite a bit, birds don't care for it much though unless used to it and hungry, for my birds I use 50/50 Milo/Wheat Milo will put mine up and the wheat is just a better feed nutritional wise, this will also pull wt off of my birds,in other words its not a 24/7 feed forever as it's a week feed !

Mother Lode, When would you introduce peas during the fly season (if ever)I heard it will help them look less ragged. If the peas are fed, when and how much?

Hi Scott, As you mentioned 50/50 Wheat and milo is not 24/7 feed forever, wondering how often you use peas or any other grain beside base feed
Thank you, -Rauf

I look at the various grains as tools,a lot of things play in though such as condition of the birds, weather, and the family of birds,I keep 4 types of grains,Austrian Peas(protien),wheat (weak protien/carbs) Milo (carbs) and Salfflour (heavy Protien/fat),I use the wheat to condition the birds as far as pulling the fat off,if they start coming down on me I'll mix with Milo which will put them up,I'll also use this if I predict wind on fly day for that energy extra energy,if my birds are flown on a mix for to long (wheat,Milo, peas) they'll get strong on me and fly fast with wings bent like a racer not much action going on when you see this and if there is it's short rolling and far from banging out thier potential, for maintance flying I'll hit them with a light mix on fly day and wheat on the rest days,as for how long I'll run them on wheat I'll go ten to 14 days when setting up a fly, this really slows the wing beat down also which is conductive to Rolling and as the fat peels off the speed and qaulity picks up,once the roll starts getting ragged I'll hit them with the peas,it could be Milo/wheat/Peas by thirds or 2/3 wheat and 1/3 peas along with a couple day rest, for birds that have to quick of a trigger and or to much depth I'll hold the roll back with popcorn or more protien(peas),during the moult they get mix through out it with Salflour added,if I'm competing they will get wheat no more than 4-5 days straight just to get a handle on the weight and slow the wing beat down but during that time of year the wheat will shut the roll down due to they just need that extra fat and protien,a word of caution, this is for mature or on thier way to mature birds and not squekers or in very cold conditions, you just have to play around and find what works and develope a knack for when to do what
