hey guys, i'm deep into training my two kits of young birds, and am planning on building a breeding loft for next year, thought i'd get some ideas first. i'm guessing 8-12 pair stock loft, with room for feed storage, judging cages and it needs to be able to separate sexes and maybe an odd bird pen, for non breeders or hold overs. i've pretty much figured it would be at least 12x8, but if needed, can be made larger. would hate to regret not making it bigger, but don't want to go crazy just yet.

Nice looking loft.

There is a lot to consider, take your time.
Too small: and you will have to add on.
Too big, = more money, time & WORK!!

Sometimes bigger is not better. In lofts any way. LOL

Keep looking on here and the net for pictures.

Some of these guys have awesome lofts, good ventilation,
easy clean up, wood or wire floors, sun lights,
separate compartments for feed & water, so the birds don’t escape.

A permanent loft should take a lot of thought, so when your
finished you don’t say “Ah crap, I wish I would have done that.”

Jerry right about thinking it out. I planed for over a month or so.Then took about 4 months to find the birds that i wanted. Will anyhow i just added 4 more feet to mine. The add on was the same as the breeding side. So now 4 walk in kit boxes and 8 more breeder boxes.

I think one of the more important things a loft should have is proper Ventalition and lots of it.

excellent lofts, and thanx for responding. now, what i really need are floorplans, so i can visualize what goes where and what is needed. so, what is the most important thing that you DIDN"T put in your design that you wished you had? since i have a double kitbox already, i'm not planning on including kit boxes into the breeding loft, for now. i am planning on another double kitbox in the future. i'm still in the thinking/planning stage, as i'm not even sure how many breeders i can handle. i'd rather limit myself, in order that it doesn't become a job. i want it to still be a hobby so that means fun. i do realize that a well planned building will make it MUCH easier to keep clean and healthy. c'mon you guys, pics and floorplans.

Steve,

I had three kit boxes before(exterior)...and I tell you what...I dumped all those kit boxes and I am glad I did...there is NOTHING better then feeding your birds during a rain storm and being indoors....basically all my feeding is done from the inside and I only open the outside doors to fly....trust me..there is nothing better....I sold my double and single box to a new flier...even moving birds around etc....is soo much easier...and all the boxes are the same...so its easy to train the young birds.

The loft is 14X9...three kit boxes 3x3...so I have storage above the kit boxes for feeders etc...I had a tarp custom made to catch the poop and is hanging from hangers....and underneath the kit boxes...I store the feed. The breeder loft is 8.5 long x 4.5 wide...the hen and cock loft are 4.5 deep X 2.5 wide...and 8' high ceilings...I almost did the same thing but I am glad that I added the kit boxes and took the advice of Brian McCormick and Scott Campbell.

Paul, all good points, and i certainly could use the present double kitbox and add a couple into the new loft. what did you put in the new addition? do you have a finished pic of that?

I added a 4th kit box....basically I kicked out one end...except I made it a youngbird box with 30 perches...so it is about 4' wide and three' deep....I will take a photo in the morning and post the addition.

I had a companies like tough shed...give me bids...because I wanted it 9' wide and most come 8' wide...it came it at 2000,00 right on the nose for the building...they installed the windows and two sky lights and also framed it so that I could mount my breeder boxes and my kit box doors. The windows (three) were 50.00 total..at a window shop.they were in there for sale bin (extras from a job). The two sky lights were from Homoe Depot for 50.00...and all the interior stuff I did myself...the total for Lumber, Wire, Hinges, locks etc were about 200.00 and the traps were 50.00 each....

so total was about...2500.00 for everything....The floor is 1" plywood...

hey Game, i will definetely appreciate your help building the new loft. and we'll wait till it gets cooler too!

Walt, did you build your loft or is it a store bought shed? do you have an overhead floorplan? looks really great.

Paul, your loft looks awesome, especially the way you incorporated your kit boxes into it. costco has a sweet shed, with a nice cedar shiplap sheathing that smells sweet. i'm thinking it may be perfect, at only 999.00. thinking...

Steve, Here are a couple of pictures of the loft I put up last year.Paul is correct about the advantage to having everything under one roof, especially when the weather gets nasty. I had Tuff Shed put up the building and then I finished the inside. Basic building is 12X32.

is it a good idea to have box or v'perches in a breeding loft? i have seen them in pics, but wondered if they just create problems with fighting amongst pairs.
