Hi guys. With all the talk of the trouble in acquiring good Rollers, I would like to encourage you to stop by our new auction site, (Edited) get registered and maybe list some birds you have available. The site is for all types of Pigeons, Doves, Poultry, House Birds, Supplies, Books, Collectibles, and all other types of animals. Perhaps if some good Rollers were made availabe by some top breeders, you could get more interest in the hobby/sport.

If a person if aquiring some good stock rollers he should go to the NBRC website and look up members for the area he is in and meet as many roller men and watch them fly
before he puchases any birds. You need to be very cautious when buying rollers from these kind of websites such as Eggbid. Don't get me wrong there are people that have good birds but you also have your feather merchants looking for a quick buck.

Thats all well & good if you live in an area where you can do this.Where I am there is noone that has Rollers that I know of.I looked for 10 years trying to find some.It was finally after getting a computer and finding Eggbay at the time that I was able to get some of the best Rollers that ever flew.Had it not been for 2 of the most Honest men I have ever dealt with on Eggbay/EggBid I would still be without Rollers.I sell on Eggbid and I guarantee that anything I sell is not Junk.I sell on Ebay and have several thousand good Feedbacks.I have found that there is more Honest people in this world than there is ones trying to rip someone off.I guess I am still from the Old School where your Word is your Bond or a Handshake will close a Deal.It would be nice to have someone to share the Hobby with and I hope you all that live close enough to each other appreciate the fact and enjoy each others company. My advice to anyone looking at birds on any auction is to ask the Seller questions.Any good Seller will try to Honestly answer any questions you may have.Thats what Feedbacks are for.Read their feedbacks and see what others have to say about a Seller. But remember a New Seller has to start somewhere so ask plenty of questions and if something don,t sound good LOOK elsewhere. Hey Bluesman,
It really depends how well or how deep you want to get into the roller hobby. I'm lucky enough to live in a area where there is plenty of roller guys live. And it is a hot bed for good rollers. I have traveled halfway across the U.S to look at birds. From judging to visiting friends in the hobby.
All you have to do is pack up your suitcase and go looing for a few days. If you go to the NBRC website and click the link area events and then click your state you will see the members of the NBRC in there. I believe every state has one or more members with the exception of Alaska. If you need the NBRC address it is www.nbrconline.com.
But don't take there word that there birds are good just because they are in the NBRC. You have to go and see them for yourself. That way you are the judge at what you seen. Now don't get me wrong but there is some very honest people in the hobby. You just have to do the research yourself.
And you will find the more you leave your own back yard the more you will learn. ANd the more friends you will gather on the way.
I have a friend in Idaho who I have never had the pleasure of meeting face to face. Only from phone conversations, email and chatrooms. But I have been talking to him since 1996. I finally received some of his birds less than 2 years ago. And I believe with what I have here now it was worth the wait. And the same with Scott C. I trust these guys because we have been friends for a good long time but we have never met face to face. We call each other and wish each other luck on fly days and we talk in the chatroom on a daily basis.
So Bluesman even if your a 1000 miles away from anyone your only a click away to meeting some of the greatest people on the earth.
I have bought birds off of Eggbid. Not performing rollers but budapest and a few others. But feedback is not an answer. If you can talk one on one with these people you can tell if they know what they are doing and what they could do.
This is an example: dont take it the wrong way ok!
Say for example you never seen a roller before in your life. You have only read about. So you go to eggbid or pigeons for sale .com Or a place like that and you purchase some birds. You care for them birds for 2 years and now you have babies. Your babies are out there flipping and rolling 20 to 30 feet. Now here is where the real story comes in. Do you tell the next person you have got good rollers because they roll 30 feet twice a minute? Do you tell them they change axis in the middle of the roll? How could you, you never seen it any different than what you have now. Does your birds roll smooth and comes out of the roll in the correct direction? yours comes out that way all the time so you don't know. What style of rollers do you have? If you have never seen them no other way you have nothing to compair them too. Do you have birds that pulls the kit along and tries to make the rest of the kit to fly with them instead of rolling. Do you have birds that fight the roll.
Everyone of us has some of these birds thats where our culling and experience comes to play. If you never seen any of these then where will the guys getting birds from you be in a couple of years?
Like I said don't take this the wrong way. it wasn't aimed at you just throwing out ideas. Thats why its the most important to make an effort to get out and see some competitions. Espically on the W/C and Fall fly fly's. Where there is a final judge that comes around and gives you an idea what he has seen so far. You don't have to be flying just being there and watching the other guys birds and listing to what the judge had to say about them. You can learn alot.
I have traveled more than 10 hours one way to watch a couple of my buddies fly.
Thanks Brian Middaugh

Well Brisn.Like I said before we are all not fortunate to be able to travel all over the world to look at everyones birds.Never been over 400 miles from home myself.Does that make you a better roller man than I am? Does that make your birds better than mine? I suppose that is why a lot of the birds I sell wind up in Ca. and they keep asking for more. There is other people in this world that have to trust their fellowman and take their word or do without. No offense taken but your way is not my way and what works for you might not work or be convinent for me.And sometimes what you see is not what you think it is.David

My experience on the NBRC web site have not always been satisfying. You talk about feather merchants, I have not been very successful with that site at all. A guy named Bill Crider was about the only enjoyable experience I have had. A lot of those memebers do not even want to talk to me, "because they don't know me" or they want to charge upward of $200 for a pair and sometimes a single bird. Give me a break. One well known breeder required that I tell him all about myself before he would even discuss anything with me(ain't that something).

I am not happy with many members on the NBRC website. It scares me when roller breeders begin to think they are elitist. There are a lot of them that think you can't have good rollers if you are not competing.

So, why not try those sites. More than likely you will get as good of birds as you would from a NBRC member and probably for much less money.

Nick there are over 2,000 members in the NBRC and just as many personalitys, why do you fault the guys that want to know more about you before talking about cutting you any birds, there's a lot of years of hard work behind a lot of these familys.

Good post Brian and good advice,Dave you have about 40 guys in PA. Did you email Scotty Rice ??,you guys have to get out of your own backyards and see whats out there !!!!!!,as for egg bay STAY AWAY from it and if your looking for qaulity birds do your homework and yes that might mean that you'll have to get to know some of these guys,I enjoy checking it out(eggbay) from time to time but as far as the Rollers I've seen on it,from what I can see is nothing but a bunch of poo poo and I would never advise sending anyone that direction, actually I would talk them out of it,you have Tony here offering birds, from what I can see and knowing a little of whats behind them they should be the real deal,it's far better to start with a couple of good ones then to start with a whole lot of poo poo birds.
thats my opinion

Yes.I did email Scotty Rice and he never responded to my email. If I choose to stay in my Backyard that is my business.I was looking for good rollers and I found some of the best there is.And YES I became acquainted with them thru Eggbid.I would reccomend anyone not to shy away from Eggbid,BirdBid or any other auction out there. There is just as GOOD & Honest people selling their birds there as there is in the NBRC. Just because we sell our birds there and they maybe sell cheaper than the BIG Competition boys don,t mean they aren,t any Good.As I said earlier maybe thats why a lot of my birds I sell wind up in Ca.Maybe they can,t afford the prices they are being asked.I work just as hard producing good Rollers as the next fellow.Don,t be surprised if the fellow that beats you in competition does so with birds that came from this Backyard Mountain Billy who chooses to stay at home and enjoy his Family and to watch his own Rollers work.I will not be responding anymore on this subject. As I said before I have nothing to prove to anyone but myself. Not saying I won,t jump in on another conversation. This is a good site and we all have our opinions on different things. But you won,t get me out of my Back Yard.LOL David

Dave I spoke with Scotty yesterday morning he said that he had'nt recieved an Email from you,you may want to try again,it's rare that someone will sell thier best, usually they come in the form of a gift and not everything can be bought, Dave if you won't step out of your own backyard how do you know what you have? what do you have to compare to? not trying to cause trouble here but just something to think about.

Yes, Scotty Rice is great gentle man and very serious roller guy. He has very nice rollers. I have bought a kit from him last year and these birds are best rollers I have ever seen. He is very honest and helpful person. I have learned lot about rollers from him.

Okay, here is my .02 cents... Obviously I have a bias but I'll stick my neck out a little. The most important step in breeding quality rollers is to get some first.

Many people are introduced to rollers through friends and happenstance and unless they have the good fortune to meet someone with quality stock, "any" roller will do.

These people will go to auction sites and pet stores and buy a few rollers, some will be from "feather merchants" and others from individuals trying to make an honest buck providing a quality product (roller).

It is my guess a new person will be attracted to colorful rollers and buy those first. He will see some performance and be okay for awhile. He will read and learn and perhaps see rollers performing better than what he has.

It is at this point, the true fancier will be born and the unending desire to have the best will overtake him and his journeys will take him far and wide in search of the best he can find and afford.

He will begin to understand the performing ideal of the Birmingham Roller. He is hooked and will never get away. He will make the decision to buy from auctions or from other individuals he can trust to provide quality rollers.

If he cannot find the performance he has come to expect and has frustrated all options he will quit rollers.

Any roller breeder worth his salt, will have been to the well and found it dry. There is an old saying "dig your well before you are thirsty".

New roller breeders, Roller-Pigeon.Com is your well. Drink up...
