well as a newbie in this hobby myself what i usually ask for is how they feed when competition is near, have they been flown and how well do they do. Or if you live near them just ask to pick them out of the sky. Some guys are pretty lay back with their birds and let you pick the ones you like out of the sky. Or just ask if you could get proven breeders.
