Hello Pat, Go ahead and ask away! I am armed with my copy of "Pigeon Genetics" by Bob McGuan and there is a nice section in there on ALMONDS!

BREEDING ALMONDS IS NOT AS HARD AS YOU MIGHT THINK.THERE IS THE OLD SAYING ,YOU HAVE TO BREED AN ALMOND WIH A KITE(BRONZE),WHICH WILL WORK ,BUT THERE ARE OTHER COLORS YOU CAN USE.I HAVE BRED EXCELLENT ALMONDS FROM A SOLID BLACK CHECK,WITH RED IN THE FEATHERS,WHEN YOU OPEN THE WING.YOU CAN ALSO BREED THEM TOGETHER .SOME WILL BE BLIND WITH BULGY EYES BUT NOT ALL.IT DEPENDS ON YOUR ALMOND FAMILY.YOU CAN GET THEM FROM YELLOWS ALSO ,BUT THEY WILL NOT HAVE THE GOOD YELLOW BACKGROUND,THEY WILL BE BLACK OR RED TICKED. I HOPE THIS HELPS.

I meant that you can breed an ALMOND with a yellow and possibly get almonds=not a kite to a yellow.Every color I refer to is to be mated to an Almond. BLACK CHECK =KITE= YELLOW=RECESSIVE RED?= I SEE YOU HAVE KITES IN YOUR STOCK.IF YOU HAVE YOU CAN BREED ALL THE ALMONDS YOU WANT WITH THE KITE+ ALMOND

Tim, Do you want rollers or do you want colors ? Breeding for color will cost you good performance. Breed the best performers to the best performers, PERIOD.

Well Tim you can't make a left turn and a right turn at the same time and you can't breed for color and performance at the same time, many say they do but color and wishful thinking will prevail before performance everytime, but if the pretty mongral colors are your thing then by all means enjoy them.

I've been doing almonds for a few years now in my Baldhead Roller Line. I've won several shows with some of mine and while it is difficult to breed for color and another purpose, don't let anyone tell you it is impossible. My best information I had when beginning was to use Recessive Reds or Yellows. If they weren't available then find blue check because sometimes they carry bronze, which gives the good background color. If you can see a little bronze or red in the blue-check, that would be ideal. After doing that for a few years, I got very few nice colored almonds. The recessives worked much better. Bronze is ideal. How do you get bronze, you might ask. Show tipplers carry some of the best bronze, so I was able to get one that was part Bald. with the white wings, head and tail. That has made the best colors yet. You want to avoid crossing into any color that carries a 'spread' factor, such as Pure black, Opal, etc. These produce mostly white young. Almond color is very different and it will take a lot of experimentation on your part to succeed. Good Luck! Bob
