When is it a good time to cut the feed on young birds to get more roll out of them?Basically start treating them like the older birds.

Luis, you shouldn't have to cut the feed on young birds for more roll, the good one's should roll no matter what. The only thing I will do at around the 5 mo mark is cut the protien to slow the wing beat down. One thing that I see that kind of jerks some in is not flying for a few days, that is if you have been flying them day in and day out like I do. ---------- Just my Opinion Scott

Scott I have a question for you??....If you are feeding 50/50 wheat & milo, how do you cut the protien back?. Iam not sure how to do that. Guess I still have a hard time understanding when and how long to feed that mixture. ---------- Fly High and Roll On Paul

Paul, to be honest it kind of bothers me when I see talk of straight Wheat or 50/50 thrown around. I have strong type birds , and yet too weak of feed for too long will trash them, maybe even ruin them for too long of a period in the wrong weather especially the 50 /50 . Mainly I will only use the 50/50 to pull condition down in short order when needed, never do you want to use it on youngbirds. ---------- Just my Opinion Scott

Trev, normaly I do mix my own and when I cut the protien I just cut the peas. But even with commercial mix you can cut it with wheat or Milo to get the protien down. My young birds get a mix up until 7 mo. old or so,then I will play with some straight grains for short periods. My concern is more on them growing into healthy mature pigeons ,throughout thier entire life they are going to get mix of some sort depending on weather and thier condition. Straight Wheat or 50/50 are nothing more than tools to use to serve a purpose, that purpose is to pull the fat when needed and pull condition down a tad, never do they live on it,and in cold weather/molt it is rare that I use straight grains. ---------- Just my Opinion Scott
