Hi folks, I've looked through the archives here and found a little bit of information, but I am wondering if anyone can give me more info on training birds to a small portable kit box.
I'm not interested in competitive flying. Just a small kit - 5 or 6 birds - that I can take to different locations and fly for my own enjoyment.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? I gather that I would need to start with young birds that have been hand-fed. I imagine I would need to get them to associate the kit box with being fed. And that I would start this whole procedure in one place and gradually move it around in small increments until the birds get the idea that the box is portable. Probably starting by moving it around the backyard. A whistle would probably help to call them back when it is feeding time...
But that's about all I can gather. (remember, i am not trying to get a competition level kit here - just something fun to watch) Can anyone tell me if I have the right idea here?
Thanks in advance! ~Karen p.s. I still don't have any rollers, but should be getting some breeding pairs in the next couple of weeks if everything goes accordingly.

Sounds like you have the right idea from what I remember in some conversations! I believe painting the top of the kitbox a bright color, so they can spot it easy was another suggestion that I remember!
There is a few guys here that fly portable, I'm sure they will chime in here in a day or two! I will email a couple of them if they don't! Good luck and keep us informed! I plan on flying portable some day when time permits! ---------- Val

Thanks Val, I appreciate your quick and helpful response!
I'm totally new to this but I'm determined to make it work. Ever since I saw videos of this being done a year or 2 ago, it has been on my mind. Seems like the perfect way to enjoy the sport, as well as potentially expose other people to the wonders of the pigeon hobby.
I'll probably need all of the help I can get though ;) ~Karen

Karen,
Sippi knows as much about it as anyone I've talked to. I have seen his birds fly, although he flys from a rather large trailer but the thecnique would be the same.
Send me an email, mine address in on my profile, I have a couple of site I can direct you to that will help.
I am planning to fly from a small european box also, I will use a white Indian Fantail as a dropper, a whistle and feed can to call the birds down.

Hi Karen I fly portable only. I havent used the small European box yet but I plan to. I wrote a rather long how to email for a school a couple of months ago. If you would like I can email it to you. You have it about right though. Start young. I start mine as soon as they eat feed by themselves. I put them on the loft floor when thier tails are about two inches long. They will start to eat faster on thier own. Then I move them to the box before they learn to fly. This makes them easier to keep on the landing board and they trap very easily when they are younger. Move the box daily and they wont home to a certain spot. I learned this the hard way. I left my box in one place in the yard for a week and then flew my birds a hundred yards away. They all landed where the box had sat a week. Now if I dont fly I at least turn the box ninety degrees so the view changes. You can email me at psisk@hughes.net.

Hey Al how you doing? hope all is good with you and the family.I was reading once again my old NBRC and spotted you on page 59 May June 2000,"The City of Fitchburg has join the ranks of many others across the country in waging war against the common pigeons. when they were saying things like pigeons breed decease and you took a stand on the issue and was place in the public spotlight by the city's newspaper.the Sentinel and Enterprise. you made a point about pigeons have no more decease than any other animal.and if you have a large population of any animal all together they going to leave a mess.,then you show then the difference between our birds and the city bred variety.--------Just want to say Thanks for looking out for our birds.. I use to go to Fitchburg Mass, years back in 1986.to visit my sister-law .would go running in Coolidge park .This article brought some memories. Ralph....

Hi all, and thanks for your responses! Sippi, Donny, and Snake Doctor, I will be sending you e-mail shortly. Much appreciated!
I am very excited about this adventure but a little apprehensive too since I've never done anything like it before.
I'm sure I'll be back here with lots of questions once I've got my breeders settled in & doing what they do :)

Hi Al, I do have one question. What is a wafer kit? Another word for portable? Or a special type? Pardon my ignorance. Tried to Google it and only got info on candy bars, lol. ~Karen

Karen; A wafer kit is probably what you would be interested in. It is the smallest of 3 kinds of mobile flying; usually a box about 3 ft square, or under, that can easily be managed by one person and only holds a few birds (ie) 3 to 6 or 7. The next size up is a bigger box that may require 2 people to handle and holds more birds. The larger sized mobile lofts (like Sippi has) are trailer sized and usually towed behind a truck. There is no such thing as an ignorant question. We want you to enjoy the hobby! Al

Hi Ralph: I'm well; thanks for asking. Coolidge park used to be my base of operations when I was training birds to fly portable. May have even seen you running around the track LOL. Sometimes if I would lose a bird within 10 miles or so, I would often find them the next day waiting for me at Coolidge. Good luck.......Al

Hey Al what part of L.A. are you in? I am only two hours from Dothan. One day me and Snake Doctor are going to compete out of Wafers. I have to get him over his setback first.
