If you have let your membership expire I am hoping that you will consider renewing your membership. Lots of solid information available and it keeps you in contact with the Roller World and helps the Roller World to stay in contact with you.

If you have never been a member I highly recommend you joining. It easy to do and the cost is light. Just go on the NBRC website and click on a few places and you're in. Your membership dues help keep this glorious hobby of ours.

Nick,

I let my membership expire last December after being a member for 8 years and an RD for 5 of those.

I purposely let it expire due to the lack of action I saw taken on the BOP issue. Once the NBRC gets serious about addressing the BOP issue and takes a firm stand on the behavior of the officers and the membership, I would like nothing better than to rejoin.

How much more can they do? I know theirs plenty of GRIPING about BOP and that's about all anyone can do for now.
Their is a lot more good information going on here other than taking the Government on. One is ways to try and minimize your losses.

I've been a member for 4 years and mines just recently expired.

Price of gas approaching $4/gal, worker layoffs across the nation and children getting kicked out of their homes due to widespread foreclosures.

....and

Pigeon feed aint getting any cheaper either!

Hmm....

I'll more than likely renew my NBRC membership dues after my income tax return. Face it folks.... it's "HARD TIMES"!

I was doing real good financially a few years ago, but economic stability in the U.S. and global economy have changed dramatically since then.

What do you rebels boycotting the NBRC expect them to do? I've been hanging around for a while and have read all of the opinions and know a lot of the facts. If I recall Mr. Firl, it was you that wanted every person who was busted to be kicked out of the NBRC. Is that not correct? I recall seeing a picture on Earls of you and your loft and one of those thingy-ma-bobs in the background.

Sorry to make my first post on this site such a harsh one, but I've read enough about people boycotting because the NBRC didn't do something. I'm not an NBRC member and never have been. I'm just a backyard flyer. But I will stand by those accused as they respresent more people than will ever care to be mentioned.

Ken, Milo, Rollerman,

It ain't helping anything standing on the outside and shouting in. If you want change or action, get in and work within. You're not going to get the action(s) you want by not taking action yourself.

The BOP problem is being addressed, but it is going to take some time and a lot of effort. Changing a federal law takes some doing and there is action going on right now.

Marcus,

It costs less than 7 cents a day. Give up one Starbucks every two months or so and you can afford it. It is important to the hobby to keep that memborship alive.

Nick/BA/ List,

my name is Ken Firl and I was an RD of th NBRC for 5 sonsecutive years so I have "worked" with the NBRC from the inside. I have been a leader in the largest localpigeon club in the US for the last 8 years. I helped begin and run the California state fly. so, I have been working on the inside in every way I can think.

I expect the NBRC to take some action to prevent what has already happened from happening again:

1 - Suspend any NBRC leader or member who is found to be charged with a violation of the MBTA.

2 - Kick out any NBRC leader or member who is convicted of a violation of the MBTA.

3 - Educate the members of the the club as to what has transpired and educate them on what actions they should take to avoid a repeat.

4 - Begin to organize and cooperate with other national and international pigeon organiations to begin to bring the issue of BOP's killing our property to attention of the federal and international government organizations responsible. There are at least

5 - Begin collecting data on BOP sightings and attacks so that the magnitude of the problem can be objectively communicated.

Many of the guys entrapped into this mess were my friends and have met my family and slept at my house. That does not mean I turn a blind eye when our sport is being trashed. Have they been martyrs, yes, I think so. Does that mean we should bury our head in the sand to the facts, no, I don't think so. I was also willing to give the benefit of the doubt to the guys charged. That time has passed now that several have either plead gulity or been convicted.

The time is now to begin to move proactivley forward in defense of our beloved sport using all legal means within our power. Otherwise our sport will continue the descent into oblivion as more laws are passed protecting the BOP's from the evil pigeon fanciers, and city councils and planning departements across the country make more and more stringent laws against the keeping of pigeons.

All because we were asleep at the wheel and chose to do nothing.

Sincerely,

Ken Firl

The whole thing is; he can't do it alone and he needs people like you, now. Not after the fact, but right now. Don't wait until things develope to your liking.....there is no quick fix.

Tell your RD to get off his ass and start pushing for changes instead of hanging around in the background or in the dark.

Nick... I've already given up the Starbucks. Gonna miss them sexy gals in the a.m. though. he...he...he

No matter what, gas prices are still just too expensive at the pump. I seriously don't know how those low income folks can afford it.

Hmm.... speaking of gas prices.

I've taken major consideration about the notion of buying myself a GM made hybrid. Will wait patiently until I see one I like... and is also affordable.

For heavens sakes.... gas at the pump is just too freakin high! You know I'm tellin the truth Nick.

I have no ill feeling against any of the guys who got arrested or accuse or what ever,I stand behind them 100 percent.
they were protecting there birds.it was the wrong way .but they did what they had to do and i know they regret it now.but like i said i don't judge them until i walk a mile in there shoes.

Val,

Send some information in to improve the reading. Write about you own experiences in the hobby or what you are doing to limit the number of BOP attacks. The bulliten depends on the membership to feed the interest of the readers.

There is a study group formed concerning BOP. To give this a year to create national change may be a little unrealistic.....but there is activity I assure you.

Ken,

I would like some things done with the NBRC except #1 and #2. I have never met you but chatted a bit with you a couple of weeks ago and you seemed like a good respectable guy to me. Please understand that I would never try to do anything to this great sport of ours. It was a ignorant thing on my part, but never would have imagined that this type of thing would have happened. Knowing what I know now, I would have never owned one or violated the MBTA. It was my first competition fly, 6 months in the hobby, I DQ and was fined and arrested. Wasn't a good day for me. I've paid and served my time along with my good friends that were involved. I don't think kicking us out of the NBRC would make any difference. I know I will not make a mistake like this again.

I will continue to support the NBRC.

Efren,

thank you for that note, I think it indicates the level of your integrity.

I am not saying anyone that got in trouble before new rules were introduced should get in trouble. I am saying now that we recognize what the consequences are we should put in new rules to protect the club and the sport.

I am not trying to punish anyone already caught, the Lord knows I have plenty of my own indescretions.

I am only trying to look forward and protect our sport for the future. We did institute such a rule in our local club and it has paid off already. There was some moaining about it at first but we got the executive committee to see the value in insisting our members be above the law in this regard.

It's the right thing to do.

Sincerely,

Ken Firl

Im in no hurry in renewing my subscription, ive been a members for years,i was disapointed with the NBRC when the BOP issue first happened, in the beginning all arrested where supose to be inocent till prooven guilty,I did not see the NBRC run down here and send anykind of repricentation to help these guys,if they pleaded guilty or not that was about a year latter, the NBRC never tryed to defend them in any way i know of.
if you look in the bulletin it shows the new members of the family, let me tell you with a family that dont support you when you get in trouble you might as well not have a family...
Many people did stupid things years back with the BOP,these guys just got cought, now we know how stupid it was,I think they all paid there dues.

I agree Ken, with everyone knowing what the seriousness of the consequences are, those rules should be implemented.

Hector, I think at least a call or some kind of support would have been nice or maybe they could have been the one who held a benefit show for all of their members, as they were the ones who were showing everyone how to build a cage... To me that insinuates the use of one is no big deal and is okay.

Correct me if I am wrong .
1. you feel that every time a NBRC member gets arrested the NBRC should assist them.

2. I have every issue from 1999 and on of the NBRC magazine and I cant find where that NBRC shows anyone how to build a Trap or encourages them to build and use one.

3. as adult's are we not responsible for what we have in our back yards.

I may be wrong but from you post thats the feeling I get by what you say.

Efren I felt terrible about what happened .. I do not think the NBRC Club should be held responsible for the mistakes of a few of its members.

I also dont think its fair to blame the NBRC or its members for this unfoutunate situation.

my opinion

George,

Nowhere in my post do I state that they should assist anyone who gets arrested or gets arrested in the future. I simply stated a call showing some support or something, like many of my friends did. I also never blamed the NBRC or any of it's members for my arrest. I have said many of times it was my fault and it will not happen again.

I have seen the issue in question. I would rather not say what year as I would not to hurt the sport anymore. Again, I'm not blaming anyone but myself, I served my time and paid for my fines and learned from my mistake.

I think you need to re-read it again without a negative look to it. Like I said, I am still a NBRC member and will continue to be one.

The NBRC has hit a milestone. It now has over 2000 members, so the trend is pretty positive right now. A lot of you guys have a lot of knowledge and you should submit some of it for publication in the bulletin. The worse thing that could happen is that it be turned down for some given reason.

Churn some stuff out.

I am thinking about it, but I can't write anything without being a smart ass(LOL)

I think unfortunately the NBRC membership is made up of folks spread over a vast terretory and the only means of communication to many is the newsletter/magazine.I think the NBRC has done a good job of promoting the sport/hobby with its annual events, but i don't think they had the foresight or leadership to prevent what happened ,or to deal with it when it did.Specially when their top officer was involved!
I believe it's time for the NBRC to come up with a plan for the future of the organization through better leadership, planning, communication to its members and a very clear vision of where it plans to go in the future with the promotion and protection of the Sport!

The NBRC has being around for many years as has the sport of flying rollers and just as times have changed so have the circumstances of our sport .I belief that through the
steps before mentioned, the NBRC can once again capture the interest of the many performing roller flyers around the states & the world!
