If it was to get to a piont where I cant Fly no Rollers I would just Fly Racing homers

I once had a kit of Homers and I never lost one to any BOP In California.

I currently have 3 Pair of White Homers .

George, I think that is where I would go also, but I doubt that I would have the time or money right now to do it proper.
I can fly around the BOPs here, and now that I have gotten a 8 hr type job every it keeps me from kicking out the birds during migration.
Last Fall not a single Cooper locked in on the loft and they just kept on moving.
I now only have one flyer in my area and we talk once a week or so, when we start getting hit both of us quit flying and they move on.
I am expecting them to start moving through here any day now along with everything else, just gotta fly smart as possiple and not let them lock in on the loft.
Soon there will be baby birds everywhere and then they will start thier slaughter on the baby Songbirds in and out of thier nests

George, I just love pigeons, it is in my blood and has been that way a very long time.
But there are also many show type breeds that really facinate me, Trumpeters have always had a special place in my heart, as have Modenas, not the Mongral Modenas that you see today that are crossed up with show Kings for size and who knows what else for color.
There are German import Modenas that I saw that look to be the real deal.
I think that if I couldn't fly the Birminghams (which are my favorite)I would have several breeds and Racers as the sporting breed.
Some seem to just turn towards mongralizing the Birminghams for weird stuff and color, I couldn't do that to any breed,I just have to much respect for all breeds.

I also like many other breeds Modenas,Indian fantails i also like the turkish flying breeds Dewlaps,Kelebeks and Wuta these birds are hawk proof i think, so there will be pigeons after the rollers are lost to the sport like the tipplers to hawks.

We should all raise racing homers on the side...That way it'll tire the BOPs out and they'll stop attacking...LMAO

I have 7 racing pigeons I fly them every morning that's when the hawks around here like to pray on my pigeons but the racing pigeon is to fast for the hawk and he gives up. I then go to work come back that afternoon and let my rollers out I've only lost three rollers so far so I guess it works well for me!

They can catch just about any thing that flys.
Coopers they dont waste any time trying to catch a bird in the air . They like to get them as there landing

Bad news guys, Homers get hit to. They don't get hit as bad as our Rollers but they aren't BOP proof. I have a buddy down the road who races and he tells me his birds get hit by Coopers and Red Tails. I get hit by the Coopers but have never lost one to a Red Tail and I have alot of them around year round.

Scott, You are right...it's in our blood. Over the past 20 years I have given up on rollers 3 times, but could only stay out a year or two each time. This time I said I would stay and that is my plan, but it is not easy. This year I raised 120 birds. In the last 6 months I have been on lockdown half of the time. I now have 58 birds left, all lost in the last 6 months. It is heartbreaking. The BOP don't leave from here when I lock down , they just feed on the wild pigeons that live a few blocks from me.... they prefer rollers tho. I don't know what the answer is, but it would be nice to be able to fly without the BOP. I have a chance to get some homers from a friend that has some good stock...free.. that might be the way to go for me at some time. I'm already thinking of breeding season and As my dad always said " better days are coming"...

I got out of homers do to time and money constraints, but still keep in contact with them. They are having just as hard a go of it as we are. In 08 the local concourse had to stop the young bird races due to the high losses. They are having to rethink the way that they raise and fly there young birds. Used to be that you would raise the young early, and either keep them dark to avoid the molt or keep them on light to get them through the molt before young bird race season. Now with the BOP they are loosing huge numbers of these early bread birds due to the BOP.
They are also having many more "smash" races where they lose a very high percentage of all of the birds released for a particular race. Many believe that this is due to falcons hitting the large flocks and panicking them and scattering them.

I have had homers in the past when I was just a kid and the only downfall I had with them was they didnt fly were I could watch them most of the time. I too also had a mess of modenas and really enjoyed them. I have to say though that the bird of choice for me were I not able to fly rollers would have to be Doneks. The Donek is the first bird to impress me performance wise since the roller. Not as dramatic as the roller but still a thrill to watch. Joe

Not sure Larry but I have a buddy that flies them up in Red Bluff. I could probably get you a pair if you would like. His birds really dive well. That is were I first seen them perform. I have already talked to him about getting another pair or two from him. I had some about 6 years ago but was to involved in flying my rollers so I gave them to him. I am thinking I would like to give them another shot. Joe

I've got a buddy that raises Catalonian Tumblers. He has a serious falcon problem but in 5 years he hasn't lost but a handful of Cats to BOP.
