Hawk migration is on. They are headed north. I was flying my hawk kit today and in thirty minutes they got chased by a sharp shin, a male coopers, and a female coopers. Saw three more while I was flying. They all went hungry though.

Yeah, not a good time to try flying.Give it another month or so I'd say, least around here anyways.
I wonder where them hawks go in the winter?Cancun?Acapulco? Some resort in Costa Rica?Anybody have any idea? They sure don't go to Colombia,South America, didn't see a one when I was there in December.

It is in Florida. There is about four weeks in the spring and four weeks in the fall that we have countless numbers of hawks of all breeds passing through and they all are hungry. It is also my favorite time to fly my hawk kits and get them polished up for training my resident BOP.

The BOP coming through here stop from Orlando to the keys. The guys in South Florida get terrorized in the winter especially in the cities. The hawks arent even afraid of people. They just come and take as they wish. I have a friend in Tampa and his birds cant even get off the loft without getting attacked. Performing is out of the question because his spend all thier time running.

Sippi,
That kind of sounds like my entire summer last year. I never did get any young birds to settle down and show any potential.
I am hoping for better this year, but I am on the dinner stop for a pair of nesting Peregrines.

Kelly, don't know about all of them but Ohio DNR tracks a male osprey by satellite every year.He migrates from NE Ohio to the amazon in Brazil every year and returns to nest in Ohio.If I remember right it only takes him 7-10 days to make the trip.

Ron,
That is interesting.Thanks.It would be interesting to hear of any other kind of tracking of migration routes for BOPs.7 to 10 days,eh.Thats faster than you could drive that distance if you only drove during the daylight hours.
I saw what I think was the first Coopers of the season here today, chased a racer down towards the beach, didn't make it home yet so now everyone is locked up till April again.

Keith,
"Mine" either, tho they do change what they are eating occasionally and leave my rollers alone for weeks at a time.
Those sites you posted are quite interesting, seems they have no fear of flying over large stretches of water, the flight path of the bird on his way to Argentina touched land again after Cuba right about where I used to live in Belize.Never saw a peri down there in the 8 years I was there, and glad to see when he flew past the Darian Gap and touched land again in Colombia, the spots he was in there were no where near where I hope to retire oneday in the mountains.Very cool. Thanks for that link, will save it.

B.O.P. are here in AZ. Flew my wife's young kit on Tuesday 2/19 and got hit with 2 falcons and 1 sharp shinned all at once. Lost another 3 of her birds. This was after a hawk attack the week before and an overfly/hawk combo the week before that...for a total loss of 9 young birds. Looks like what is left will stay locked in for awhile.
