Are you are talking wing feather in general?
If yes i like to have medium to broad feather with plenty of cover just my preference.

I have no clue but I would probably say narrow because the bird would probably go faster.. But if this makes any sense I think broad might help it spin better..

I prefer narrow flight feathers based on what i've read. It's supposed allow more air to go through the wings wich in turn allows for faster wing beat wich = more revolutions.

I like the narrow flights and narrow secondaries along with little back cover, Have seen much faster spin in MY birds with this combination. I also dont really want any flutter action as I like to see an explosion when they break with little to no warning its comming. JMHO. Joe Urbon

We are getting statements from both ends of the spectrum on this thread. Has there ever been a study concerning what is the optimal?

Much like Joe, all of my speed birds have narrow primaries and most have sparse or no backcover.
Also, many years ago I visited Norm Reed and he told me the narrow primaries in his birds were an indicator of speed, especially the last primary.

Shadow, Luis, you guy sare talking about the delivery of the roll but what about the drag when bringing the wings back up towards the original position to start the stroke over again.
narrow the only way to fly

a breeder told me...and i am not a flyer...broad wing catches too much air...narrow wings cuts quickly and easier for 20+ feet...

Yellow you are correct about that and to add to it, my experience shows that broad flighted birds can resist the roll/seldom in performance.

Well, I went and checked out my birds more closely. I didn't have any other breeds to compare with them, but the general shape of the primaries is they thin down very sharply right after the pin starts feathering. The secondaries may be sparse, but again I do not have any other birds or breeds to compare.

Those look ideal primaries for me Wayne,as the wing movement consists of two different strokes and works as two differnt units ,primaries are used primarily for downward motion, essential for gaps in these outside flight to lessen resistance to downward motion, opposite requirements for secondaries, with required width hence no gaps,to give more resistance for upward lift, once again I will stress this is my opinion only.

Wayne,

That is what I am looking at in my lofts. Noted that on the wing there are two seperate forms of feather. The very end is the thin tips and going back you have the broad tips. That is what I get out of it. I also after checking 5 or 6 find they are so similar that I cannot recognize any difference from one bird to the next. These six birds also went across a wide spectrum of performance. Inother words I could not see any difference of the wing feathering from my worse to my best. It is probably in that space between the eyes that seperates them in performance(LOL).

Yes Nick all my birds seem to have the same wing type like you stated being from a tight gene pool they are.
Like you said also theres no difference with one wing to the next in my best performers to the average roller in the kit box.
