Can't answer WHY,but if you have a bunch of pairs together and want to have your hatch real close together for ease of training, toss ALL the first round of eggs at the same time then the next batch of eggs wiil mostly all be laid and hatched on the same day.

Milan trim the feathers around the vents and see if this works.
Breeding with young birds that are inexperianced in the breeding pen can have infertile first rounds.

Milan, the only time i have had this trouble was a long time ago when i did not split cocks from hens, this year my birds have been apart since july and are raring to go,it also means i can pair them as i want, they are rested and settled and comfortable, any that do not fill eggs i trim the vent feathers as wayne has said and that usually clears the problem, jim gloucester uk.

sometimes they're infertile because the hen had a egg going on allready and the cock couldn'nt fertile in time.
even if you seperate the hens for rest from last breeding season, they someetimes still go through the process.
just my observation.
