Man you guys are so lucky. I can not put my pairs togethers until late FEB or early MARCH.
Looks good from the photo.
Question? Did you build their nest for them or did they do it themselves?
I have a buddy who uses straws for nesting material as well. Altho he builds their nest for them. As the majority of the birds are not capable of hulling the straws up to their nest themselves. Tried it once myself. Had the same problem. Went back to regular pine needles.

Thor, I dont build it for them. I like them to use tobacco stalks but they will use the straw from the floor with it. There is both in the nest. The tobacco is supposed to help keep bugs away.. They dont seem to have any problems using anything I put in the loft. This was 1 of the Jaconette pairs in an open loft.

Hounds and feathers, I see you use the old milk crates too. I like them too for the open loft. I have used them in the individual pens too. This year I just screwed them to the wall and when done breeding I take them outside hose them off and stack them behind the loft.

Hey Tapp !!! I got 3 of the pairs on eggs, but they took a little longer to set. 1 pair never did lay. And anouther pair only set 1 egg. I cheched the egg the other day and it wasnt fertile. I threw it out and split the 2 pairs up. I will try switching the mates. see what happens.... 380 cock died. I had him on 743 Keith Hughley hen, so I put her on 1 of my cocks. They look almost identicle. I will probably switch a few of them around after a couple rounds.

Thanks Donny, I hope to have some good luck with them too. I checked nesta this morning and have 5 total hatch now,

Merry Christmas Tapp, And all the gang at RPDC roller talk.

Tapp, you got a late gift coming in a day or two. Hang in there buddy. I`ll try to call tonight.

Hi Butch, Sorry to hear about 380. He was a good one. To bad they didn't have egg's. and you could have fostered them. I lost 383 last year Jerry you have gotten your timing on your pairs down pat! Good job! Butch, Jerry I wish you the best with your breeding program! Tapp

Thanks Tapp,
I started out this spring the same way. Had all 10 pairs laid within 3 days, then after the 3rd round, they were all over, laid within a 2 week period.
I have high hopes for this winter breeding pairs. I paired up mostly father/daughter and mother/son matings, except for a hen and a cock that arent related, but are the 2 fastest birds I bred this year.. Hope they throw me something special.
We will find out come the F/F..good luck to you to buddy.

Sal,
I dont have an issue with BOP in my area, so breeding in the winter, and flying those young are no real issues. I got hit 4 times last year, with 3 birds taken, and lost an entire kit to an overfly, not sure if it was BOP induced, or weather, or both..My fault!.. I will be re-entering these birds back into the kit this spring, in time to get them prepped for the W/C, and will repair the parents back together.. Good luck when you start breeding!

I did have a very young hawk chase my YB's the other day, but watching him, he wasnt even close to getting one.. I enjoyed the show.

Hey Rudy my friend, You are good, or lucky. They are half Jac.
The first are from a Jac cock given to me by Charlie Faulkening. He got his Jacs From Richard Jaconette many moons ago. The cock to the first set is 03-0243, a red mottle. The hen to them is from my family. A great performer in last years A-team and a steady worker her first year.06-1327, a blk, wht flight baldie.
Photobucket
The second set of young are from a Jac hen, also from Charlie, 06-0860, a black mottle, I won her in a drawing and picked her straight from his loft. The cock to them is a rec. red, beard, from my family. 04-585. The best bird I bred from my old Dick Stephens cock, BCR 99-101.
Photobucket
A better shot of the hen, she reminded me of the old pics of Black Rain.
Photobucket
I`ll let you know how these pairings work out. I have had pretty good luck with these crosses, My family x Jacs...
