Jim, I use them. The good thing about tobacco stems is they help keep pests away from the birds and nest, as well as having longevity in the loft for the entire breeding season. They can be reused over and over again by the birds for new nests, etc. Some of my birds are still using stems that were used by other pairs last year. They last that long. If yours are like the ones I get, I snap a handful in half, they seem to fit better in the bowls this way.

I snap them into 3 pieces myself. The birds sure seem to like them.

We use to use them for lice. Hang a bundle in the loft. after a few days the lice would get on the stalks. We'd remove the stalks with lice and burn them.Never used them for nesting material, but pigeons are'nt very particular. There was a breeder in the area that had a wooden bucket with nails in it. After a remodeling session, he fogot and left the bucket in the loft.Next morning a pair had claimed it for their nest.Raised young in it that season nails and all.I have noticed Cock birds taking a piece of straw out in the Aviary. They would tilt their heads with the straw in their beak and shake it.After each shake they would look up at the end of the straww piece and shake again. Finally, after a few shakes they would take it back to the nest. I often wondered about the shake process.Did they think the size had changed or what?
