The quality of feed from our local brand (Bay-Mor) is really down in the past few years. A friend found another brand (Browns feed) that he thought I might like. Problem is, it has to be ordered, (the guy that takes the order, does it every six weeks) then we have to drive 150-200 miles to pick it up. My question, how long will this mixed feed (50# heavy paper sacks) stored at room temperature and a medium (normal) humidity last. When I say last, I'm talking about nutritional values of the mix. 6 months, 12, 18?? Any one have any experiences in stored feed?

A long, long time if kept dry. At least 6 months and more like a year or more.

Why not ask the manufacture? Distributor?

Hey Doug,

I've been using Brown's feed for 5 years now. I drive down to PA twice a year and pick up about 12 bags a trip right from the warehouse, and I have never had any of it go bad.

Doug,

It all depends on how long the feed has been in storage in the warehouse...and then how long it has been at the feed store. I use air tight containers for my feed and I am convinced that being air tight helps.

The containers are the type used for dog food..they hold one 50lb sack of feed...they have a screw on lid and are water proof.

Paul & List, I too store my feed in air tight containers after a bag is opened. I use 48qt.capacitly picnic coolers, (the heavy duty plastic type)They also hold a 50# bag of feed. Feed stays dry, even with a fast temperature change outside, and everthing gets damp. I would like to thank all on their thoughts and comments.

Talking about storing grain . How many have you guys notice that if you keep wheat too long that the bugs get to them?

Cliff,
I use about 1 cup for a 50 lb. bag of feed. Just enough to get a light dusting on the grain.

And the DE has no effects on the birds after long term use?

Cliff,
So far I have had no problems. The grain is bug free and the birds seem healthy. Acording to the aritcles that I have read on DE, the DE particles are so microscopic that it doesn't affect the host animal just the parasites.

This diatomaceous earth you speak of; where you get that stuff from a Volcano? Just wondering.

Hmmm..... interesting. "Microscopic algae that produce glass or silicon shells for protection from microscopic preditors."

Thanks a lot for the information.
