My birds seems to like to eat the safflowers, i was wondering is it good for the birds or not? I have heard that its oily and makes the inside of a pigeon very oily is this good for the breeders and their youngs?

Yep, Safflower is an oil seed and is high in fiber as well. It is also heavy in fat and protein too and is an ideal seed for growing feathers.

I don't have any safflower availible, but I have always used black oil sunflower seed. I get it from Wal-mart in the wild bird feed section. I mix it about 1/4 or 1/5 in my feed. They go for it first out of the milo, wheat, and austrian peas combination I mix for my breeders and squeakers. has anyone ever tried the black oil sunflower seed and what is your opinoin of it?

I mix 3 parts milo, 1 part wheat, 1&1/2 parts blk oil seed, and 3/4 part peas, for my breeders and sqeaks. They seem to be doing great, any suggestions on this mixter/

I feed them too. They seem to like it and it does help them to feather out and be nice and shiny.
Safflower is just as good.Just a little smaller and easier for them to eat.

If they don`t kit,they don`t score.
Color don`t roll and peds don`t fly.
It`s a comp thing,understand?

Val, when I used to mix feed for my breeders, the waist was high due to the birds pick their favorates. I switched to only give them one type of seed at a time and the waist was cut down by 80%. I do give my bird in the winter a mix of Safflower, Peas, pellets, Wheat and Milo. On occasions and only when it gets bellow 10 degrees I give them yellow corn. I mix 4 cups of good mix, 1 cup of Wheat, 1 cup Pellets and 1 cup Safflower.
