Pigeon Lover, I just met John Weins last week and watched two of his kits flying. He lives in Richmond,B.C.,across the Fraser River from Vancouver.Nice agricultural land, fighting off the suburbs. Most of his birds are from the bloodline of Monty Neible's strain, but he does have some Barrett's and I think Billing's birds.Neible's,Barrett's,Billing's,,,man they all have great rolling potential, but man,,,over there close to the city, pigeon fanciers are all so plagued by predators, most don't even try to fly their birds.Except for maybe a few diehard Roller Nuts like John. The day I was over there watching his birds it was late around 5pm(a good time for me to fly my birds here on the island)and right away a merlin hawk started harrassing the kit.Of course they were flying like they were scared shitless, low and fast.John didn't get too worked up tho',and as soon as the first kit came in he let out another. The long and short of it is,that night,at his house the birds were to freaked out to perform.I have birds from the same bloodlines(Neible's and Barrett's).They are good rollers. The Barrett's start rolling much earlier than the Neible's.Barrett's showing some of their stuff at 3 months whereas the Neible's birds I've been told to wait up to a year or more before culling any straight flyers.I just started playing with rollers last winter,so am in a steep learning curve right now. What do your birds look like??If they are mostly blue bars, checks, mealys, red checks, black checks with white flights and tails,or black selfs, they're probably Neible's bloodline. If they are baldies or bearded, they could be the Barrett's.If you have birds that came or descended from birds from John Wein's loft, more than likely you've got some good rollers.Whereabouts do you live by the way??If you are in B.C.,maybe you would be interested in joining the B.C. Roller Club.!?From the looks of your user profile on this site, you sure have a variety of breeds.Cool. Best of luck with your birds, Kelly.

---------- ~~AnDrEaS wIlLmS~~ K here is the whole story. Im best friends with john wiens's nephew ,karl grohmueller. John gave karl 3 pair of his birds late last year i believe. They were not up to world cup standards but they were good. Of course karl didnt fly his because he has got unlimited hawks at his place. So they are all untrained but of good bloodlines. Karl is now putting together a kit. He did let one pair go about a week after he got his rollers. They did good until a hawk came out of the blue and attacked one of his rollers. One dodged the hawk and went into a roll i guess it was too shocked to stop or something but it didnt(stop). It hit the trailer and rolled under it , away from the hawk. This saved its life and the other never did return. Anyway thats that and karl then continued to breed the rollers not letting anymore loose. He gave me two kids and i put the with my homers to be raised. Everything worked out and now two of them are hawk aware, being raised with homers that were loose 24/7 and all. One of the black ones it constantly does backflips about 7 or so each time. The other one lost its rolling habits because i kept it locked up for 4 months. It is now flying with the other ones karl gave me the black the blue bared and the brown checked regularily. IT is sketchy at my place with all the trees and all but they havent been caught yet. SO iam still working on training them , i hear johns birds fly low. ANyway they would not survive at my place flying low so i trained the to fly high but letting one highflier always fly with them. So now they fly a save hight were they can over look the whole property. So im still working on training them . They have all been locked up for a long time so most are still doing the whole tail riding thing il see what happens.By the way someone asked i live in abbotsford. bc that is on gladwin rd.

They are good rollers but arent spinning well. One does 4-7 all the time and the other has just learned so hes doing 2 backflips and the others do one now and then but mostly tailriding.

Andreas, Hey,,,I'm 49 and still learning!!!When you figure you know everything about anything, stop and take another look! My name is Kelly Waugh and I live on Gabriola Island over by Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. This is my first year with Rollers so the learning curve is steep now for me.I've got quite a few birds but can't really part with any now cause want to fly the World Cup next spring so need em all to build a strong kit.I won't sell you any birds but next year I'd be happy to help you out with some birds as a gift just to see more young folks getting into the hobby.Give me a call any night after dark before 10pm and we can talk.250-247-8375. Keep 'em Flying, Kelly. PS.Do you have your rollers in a dark kitbox??That will help them to kit better when they are starting to fly.A bigger flock helps as well, but that will come to you in time.Be patient.

The ideal kitbox size is 4 ft high,4ft wide and 3 ft deep.I like the box perches cause they're easier to keep clean and you can get more birds in the box.Up to about 26 birds.I have aviaries(flypens) on my kitboxes so they can get out in the sun and if I'm having trouble with them not kittting,I keep them inside with flypen door shut for the day before I release them.Being in the dark,in a small box makes them want to kit like their stuck together with glue and if they are good birds they'll roll right down the judges throat!! Andreas, read as many of the old threads on this site as you can absorb. There are pictures of kitboxes and a wealth of information.Like I said tho, you're welcome to give me a call and I'll help you out however I can.I love that Monty Neible quote,,,,"Watch your birds, you might learn something." ---------- Kelly
