my kids went to the loft this mornig and brought back a squab that was ready to be banded. When I went to place the band on its left foot i made a grizzly discovery. Its entire left leg was missing from the hip down. Something had torn it off. The young fella was acting as nothing had happened. But man did it look bad. My loft is closed and there is no way that a dog or cat got him. Not another sinlge bird baby or adult was injured. There are plenty of young smaller than this one but they were all accounted for and doing well. The nearest thing I can figure out is this> He was on the floor near the door if the bottom lock wasn't on maybe his foot protruded out and in the middle of the night a predator saw it thinking of an easy meal. It yanked anpulled until it ripped the leg off, There weren't any marks anywhere on this little guy accept for a chunk of torn skin where his hip joint should have been. There wasn't enen a hip bone just an empty socket. It hurt me to see him go but it was unfair to make him suffer so he has gone to that great roller loft in the sky. Just thought you guys might find this interesting. it has never happened before and I have been in this hobby for along time C.J.
CJ It's probably a rat. Buld a few bait boxes out of scrap lumber. drill a hole for rat to go in. Put bait in and drywall screw a top on. put them around only thing that can get it is rats and mice. ---------- Tapp

hey i was jsut wondering is it possible for rat or mice to take eggs out of nest cuz i have couple of breeders that has happen to it now it mess up my 2006 plan ...damn
Yes a rat can do away with your eggs. A mouse is a little small. We had a rat that had collected everything shiny it could think of. It had spoons and change and lots of other things. C.J.
