A mosaic is a term to describe the simultaneous expression of two different color/marking genes. A classic example would be a blue check that has checking on one wing and bars on the other. Or a black self that shows a patch on one wing where it is clearly a blue bar. Another example would be say a blue bar with a big red or yellow patch on it somewhere. There are numerous combinations in which a mosaic can be expressed. It just depends on the genes the bird has to work with. Dominants and complete recessives are what we normally see in pigeons. For whatever reason, some birds will exhibit their dominant marking or color with some amount of the lesser dominant or "carried" genes expressing at the same time. Those are mosaics.
There are numerous web sites that have photos of mosaic mutations and descriptions of the ideas of why they occur.
The most exotic version of a mosaic I have ever seen was the OKC NPA Nationals. An exhibitor showed a bird which was a African Owl on one side and a Roller on the other. It was also black self on one side and I believe blue bar on the other. The bird was divided right down the middle, like two halves were put together. The owl side had the breast tuffs and pants where the roller side did not. Even the tail was half black on one side and blue barred on the other. It was amazing to see in person.
It was noted by some of the genetic gurus that this was actually not a mosaic, though the description does accurately fit. The assumption was that this was the one in a million chance that an owl cock bird and a roller cock bird's sperm both fertilized the egg at the same moment, or in some strange twist, the hen used the sperm from both donating fathers at the same time. I have some prints of the bird somewhere. I'll have to dig them out and have them scanned.

Brian,
I saved that photo for my archives. Strange looking bird I must add.

P.S. My good buddy has a Mosaic in his loft. It is actually a very good breeder of velocity but due to the Wildness of it's youngsters, it is now just a pigeon used as a foster. Half Black - Half Check Grizzle spilt right down the middle like that Owl and Roller you mentioned.
