After some reading and talking to some who compete in the WC and NBRC flys I am getting a difference of opinion on the last 7 or 8 days before competting. Without going into a lot of detail some rest thier birds 5 or 6 of the days final 8 days before competition; some fly everyday and rest the day before competition.
With my experience of my birds they fly and perform better when I fly them everyday. They day they come from a rest period of a day or more thier performance is less and they are much less active. I fly my birds everyday that weather permits, but everyone I have talked to so far do not and fly them less frequent in the days prior to competing.
How do you flyers of competition handle the training (not including diet changes) of your birds?
My beliefs is it depends on your family of birds? Sometimes what I believe is found to be wrong or at least needs modified.
Thanks,Nick

nick,
I too fly my birds everyday, but I get different results everytime. Sometinmes I think its my feeding or switching birds in and out of the kit box. heck sometimes when they get a day or two rest they fly different also and then even on the days that I fly them everyday the birds still perform different. Im kind of in the same boat as you if I'm hearing you right. I guess it could be due to many factors

Nick, invariably it does depend on the family of birds. Some families simply cannot be locked up for several days without bad things happening upon the next release. Other families react completely different. It really does boil down to the family and what the manager has learned about getting the most out of his birds. As you have found out, that information will vary because really there is no "standard" schedule that will insure optimum results. I fly the piss out of mine everyday for more than a week on straight wheat, then rest them for two days before the fly. I will be experimenting with an adjustment to that schedule do to the fact that often they get one day of rest after the comp and upon the next release, the are as good if not better than on comp day. This goes back to what I said about the manager learning about his birds. Brian.

Brian, Is this your routine for young birds, old birds, or is the routine the same for both? Thanks!

Hey Russ. That would pretty much be for an older established team. I have found that method usually is a little too harsh for a young team. Usually if I have a rockin' young kit, they don't need much extra help. I usually just fly them like normal with a few back to back days then a day off before the comp. The only real difference if I am going to fly a kit of young birds is that during that week I pay real close attention to each and every bird in the kit and how much they eat. Thats about it. Brian.

Brian, on the two days rest do you still feed them wheat or a mix?

Dave, they get wheat up until their last feeding which is wheat followed by a healthy serving of mix. Brian.

The best advice I could give you is ask the guy you got your birds from. He knows his birds best. I do rest my birds one day before the fly.

My birds do better by flying them the day before competition.Actually the best my birds done was in the Regional when I flew them the same day as the fly.David

Bluesman - I will probably train my birds that way. The more I fly them the better the perform. I don't know if it is breaking them down so they cannot resist the roll or I am building them up so they want to roll more often....all I know is they perform better the more I fly them (within reason; if I put em up 4 or 5 times a day I am sure they would be less active, but everyday once is just great)

Nick. What I have been doing with my Comp kit the last couple of weeks is resting them 2 days then flying them the next 2 days. The second day they fly they are the best.My family of rollers don,t have to be starved down to get them to roll.I can,t overfeed them either.Seems like just a happy medium is all they need.Weather has a lot to do with the way they perform too.David
