I noticed that nodody has asked about tail width on Rollers. I recently started back into raising rollers this year. When I got out of Rollers in the 70's I was taught by the local experts about tail width. When you are holding and feeling down the birds keel, a slight pinch to the sides of the tail should reveal a ONE feather tail! This was a very good Roller tail! Now that I am back I haven't seen this done or even talked about by my new Roller friends. I have checked and felt several birds from other peoples lofts and even my own birds. It seems the birds tails are very very wide in comparison to the old Pensoms I used to raise. Any old timers feedback on this one? I am thinking maybe I need to take this into concideration when it comes to choosing breeders? Thanks. Ronnie

I have always been under the impression that the tail on a roller does not mean much as far as it is related to the performance. It is only used as a rudder in turning, but has no influence on the spin..............

Ronnie I think that the one feather tail is more for show or because it looks cleaner , some of mine will have but most may show just a little width. There is one line within my family that is lanky and runs a longer wider tail and tend to have poor feather, just really ugly Bastards, everything type wise though is right and they can roll fast and hard and are full of roll. Sometimes we can worry about details that really don't make any difference. Scott
