Dusting birds...has anyone tried this? Will it work? Instead of hand dusting birds with seven dust could you use a large pan filled with dust and would they get in it and dust themselves like you see wild birds sometimes do? or could you mix up a dip and would they take a bath in themselves so you don't have to catch and treat each bird separate..

I have a friend who puts the Sevin dust in some panty-hose and hangs it in the loft. As the birds fly around, they will bump this and dust themselves in the process. Seems to work really well for him, but I have not tried it myself. I doubt they would dust themselves in a pan.

I have dusted by hand in the past and it was a messy, time consuming job. I also put Borax in bath water but not all the birds would bathe, leaving me with feather lice in the loft that soon spread to the other birds. Last year I picked up a small spray bottle of pest control, (sorry I don't remember the name) made for livestock and it took care of 2 kits and my breeders for less than 10 bucks. I sprayed around the necks, wings and tails. I have not seen any feather lice since. If I ever need to treat again, that's the route I'll go.
