From The Foreward:

The title of this book is meant to reflect its overall theme. It is the aerial performance of the Birmingham Roller, which is by far its most captivating and challenging aspect.

It must be understood that when communicating concepts, ideals and assuredly theory, words are miserably inadequate. However, the wrtten hand remains best, indeed, our only vehicle of intimate exposure to same. Seemingly complex at times, we must strive to extract whatever value lay there. To do less is to deny every opportunity for success.

Regarding the breed as a whole, the truth of the matter is that the birds of today are exactly the same as those at any given time in the recorded history of the breed. In both the past and present time the overwhelming collective value of these pigeons, unfortunately, is found to be something less than sporting.

Quality is the only valid pursuit with regard to the Birmingham Roller. Too often we see some poor misled fellow struggling with derelicts adrift from ancient times simply because the birds are of a particular bloodline or originated from some outstanding character of the fancy who was famous for flying kits in the sky over Atlantis.

Having had the pleasure of knowing some of these gentlemen, I would be first to recognize the significance of thier contributions toward the deposition of many a roller mystery. The great fanciers of history deserve all th e respect and admiration of the roller fraternity. Unfortunately, their names and memories are only mentioned by misinformed clowns in an effort to consumate a sale. Such people only seek to cash in on the exemplary reputations of their predecessors. They offer for sale birds which represent the quality of those past in pedigree only.

Every fancier of pigeons knows at least one fellow of this description. He posseses the same mentality as a man who would be wealthy enough to purchase a Rembrant and fancy himself a great painter. He stands ever ready to extend the grand and generous favor of permitting the novice the privilege of purchasing well bred mutts and purr pedigreed thunder buzzards for a small fortune.

Just as quality spinners are rare, so are those who breed them. It strikes me as curious that among those who could rectify the perpetual condition, there is a great reluctance to mount any serious counter measures. This attitude springs from the fear to risk exposure to a backlash of ignorant roller fanciers that would surely focus on them.

This condition has and always will leave the true Birmingham Roller teeter-tottering on the brink of extinction. It is for these reasons that I submit this book.
