Hey Jerry,
yea it is sad but true.. Doug died while in the hospital.. he was having trouble and died a few days later. Complete surprise from what I have been told.. heart attack while in the hospital.. you would think if you could survive any where it would have been there.. Take care my friend. KGB

Condolences to his family.

Hey KGB, if you can, can you or anyone else give us any anecdotes or history about Doug and/or his rollers, personal experiences or stories about him?

I met Doug Brown in 1995 at the Pensom Memorial Show at the Pomona feed store, my first roller event. I met Randy Gibson as well. Randy and Doug were best friends and partners in raising rollers, including some very good color lines. Doug was an ex Oakland Raider and a school teacher. He loved to teach about pigeon genetics, especially to my son who was about 8 years old when he met Doug. My son knows more about color genetics then most due to Doug. At age 13 my son would tell people you can't get that out a certian mating and they would get mad at him, even though he was right and they bred open loft! Anyway, Doug gave my son a yellow hen back in 200 and my very few nice yellows that I have are from that hen. I will keep her as long as she lives as it reminds me of Doug and what a true friend and teacher he was to my son, me, and all in the hobby that were privileged to know him. Don't take your good friends for granted. Enjoy your time with them as you never know when that time will be cut short. Enjoy your next fly and enjoy your friends more! Don M. Mac's Rollers

Tony asked “if you can, can you or anyone else give us any anecdotes or history about Doug and/or his rollers, personal experiences or stories about him”.
I have several fond memories of Doug and would like to share one of my favorites, although it has little to do with rollers. This conversation took place in the mid 80’s while we were driving form one loft to another during a fly; probably prompted by a passing classic car. I started the conversation by saying that my favorite car was my first, a 1963 Chevy Impala SS. Doug responded with “I bought a brand new Impala in 1963 that was the year I tried out for the Rams”.
After graduating from USC he was drafted by the Rams and trained with them. He told me that after several weeks of training and attaining what he thought was a starting position on the defensive line he was cut. He was told that although he had been their choice for the position, they had traded for a player with two years experience and due to the limits on the rooster they had decided to let him go. He then said “Do you know how embarrassing it is to lose your job to a man named Rosie” LOL.
After returning home he received a call from the then coach of the Raiders asking him if he would like to try out for their team. He told me that he asked them “why should I come up there, when I have wasted all summer working for nothing.” The response was “what would it take to get you here?”. He said that he didn’t know where the number came from, but he responded with $5000. The next day he had a knock on the door, a contract and a check for $5000 in his hand; which he spent on a 1963 Chevy Impala LOL.
If I remember correctly, he never became a starter with the Raiders, but was on the rooster for two years.
Our friendship was relatively short, but I knew him long enough to know that his generosity and kindness surpassed his physical stature. He was a big man.
