I have a pair that does not like nesting materials or they don't seem to be using it. They have laid but never used the hay or pine needles. I have them in an individual.

I like the sand idea, last year I clued some grass from the cut lawn and glued it in for those that dont build a good nest.

Your on the right track as you can get the squable leggs on chicks that cannot grip with their feet. I have some nest pads also but stay away from JEdds Black nest pads from what others had discovered, Bill C

I use sand also BUT, I don't like for it to be wet! The adult birds will make it over the lip of the bowl or go off of the nest. The squabs will need a fresh bowl with dry sand. They do well for a week after they are born and when I band the squabs I change nest bowls. The next week they will not be able to clear the lip of the bowl and it will need to be changed if wet. After that second week they can mostly clear the nest and it's not so bad, I just change them as needed. I'll say it one more time, I like sand but squabs and wet sand don't mix!

Thanks Joe, I change my nest bowls so often it's not a problem. I think it accomplishes two things, first of course, is a dry nest but also regular contact with the squabs and the nesting parents. I don't want my birds to be pets but I do want them hand tame. Starting when they are in the nest pays off later in the kit box or loft.

Take care my friend

Charles your cock bird will build the nest up , some are good builders some are not ,you kinda have to show the younger pair what a nest is all about ,Pigeons in the wild like heavy sticks for nesting material, and your cocks will usually build the nest up after the hatch it all depends on what is available for them at that time to use.
