I reasently read an artical on roller kits, and was advised to keep openings (windows or wired openings) to a minimal to help young birds kit better. I also recall that the majority of kit loft pictures i have seen have few if any openings save for the door and trap.
The two kit lofts i have built, have about a 2'x3' wire opening on the door, i wont have a kit of birds for about 2 weeks, should i cover part of the opening?

Thanks Dee

Regarding birds to kit I have try dark kit boxes light kit boxes and it has no effect on them on how they kit. You don't want any opening for any rats, cast or other animals to be able to go inside. You also want air to go in so you would want some air flow to enter.

2'x3' opening is way too big or you mean inches" and if is still inches it's still a little on the big side and a rat could go in.

DJS:
The size of your windows or door openings will have absolutely no effect on the way your birds kit.
The bigger the door, the better, as they will not hit their wings when being liberated.

You are right about the majority of kit box pictures that do not have many openings except for doors and traps.
These lofts are usually lacking in proper ventilation.

Im going to agree with roll down. The wild pigeons kit pretty nice and they aren't restricted of air and light. You stated, to help young birds kit better. So I assume that the article maybe was considering that when they get older they do not have a kit problem. I think its just a young bird thing. Mine are all over the place, will kit for a few mins then break. I think maybe its just a time thing. But for the overall health of a bird, I wouldnt keep it "closed in."

I don't know where you live, but if your loft door consists of just the wire covering, I would suggest you build another door over top of this one which you could close during wind storms or severe cold etc.
Just make sure there is still some vents for ventilation. - Most hardware stores should sell vents for under $3.

JDS...Light or Dark kitboxes make no difference with my birds. Your birds do "need" natural sunlight for health reasons. Plus they can always get a rain bath whenever it rains. As you can see I have settling cages on the outside of my kitboxes. My birds have excess to the outside anytime they want. I have 4 kitboxes, 1 fly pen and 4 breeding pens all under one roof for easy excess.
