I picked up two different types of grit at the feed store today. I have always used straight oyster shell but the granite grit was a lot cheaper. Could there be any hazard to using granite?

The grit I use smells like liquorish, the rollers love it. Don't know of any hazards with granite, but I'm not the one to answer that question.

I would stay with oyster shell simply for the needed calcium it contains and supplies.

USE BOTH!!!

The granite works the best for breaking down the food in the gizzard....oyster shells like Nick stated adds the calcium.....

Most granite grit comes with a little bit of oyster shell...or what one calls "pigeon grit"....I buy the red granite pigeon grit with oyster shell....(very little) and then add additional oyster shell.

I give my birds a mix of granite and oyster shells. They seem to be doing fine.

I think we might be misunderstanding grit. Grit is rock that bird uses to help digestion in the gizzard. It acts like their teeth to grind stuff. Oyster shell or even calcium carbonate rock is used as a supplement to provide calcium (a mineral). What happens is that manufacturers blend those 2 (rock and oyster shells) and other stuff and call it "grit." Obviously to have all those in a bag is more beneficial and hence costlier. Pigeons need both.
