I hatched a few eggs for the hell of it, Once hatched the first thing they get is a crop full of plain yogurt(warm 95f or so) then a mix of Kaytee formula there after, usually up till about 10 days, then seed, Some people just feed kaytee till weaned. The mixing instructions are on the Kaytee formula bottle for the age of the bird, just remember that the formula has to be the right temp. good luck.

Hey Tony, did you find the squabs under the yogurt diet grew just as fast and robust as they would have if they were fed with pigeon milk?

What I am asking is it OK to pull babies at a week or 2 and hand raise them to speed up the breeders or do they need the rest in between laying?

Hey RollerChief, can it be done? Yes. But if you really want to speed up the breeding process, simply foster the out the eggs to other breeder pairs and save your self the effort of feeding squabs.

If you do it right, you can have about 3 rounds of eggs from a special breeding pair in about 35 to 45 days. Hope this helps.

Roller heaven,
the new born will not survive if you dont give it some kind of probiotics, they are born with no good bacteria, Also note when feeding youngsters, you should never feed them the formula mix until there crop empty's from the previous feeding, If you keep stuffing the youngster the old food wont pass through the sytem and cause sour crop.

Tony,
Nothing is like being fed from the parents, On the formula the youngsters always seem like they were lacking something, maybe the fat from the pigeon milk, just maybe.

RollerCheif,
Do as Tony has suggested, get some fosters to speed up the process, Even at 2 weeks of age your birds should start laying again anyways, add another nest bowl to there box if theres enough room

If you add a second nest bowl to the box, the pair should lay again when the first clutch is about two weeks old. Use fosters if you need to raise alot of young in a short period of time. Healthy well cared for birds will breed ALOT of youngsters if you let them.

Glen one week later after losing her mate she's a great mom. This is her 5th round of young. Three rounds last year 2nd of this year and she is protecting her nest. All my breeders are pretty much one big happy family in the breeder loft and they all pretty much use the same area's. No odd cocks in the loft. The young are starting to peck for food and I should be weaning them in a week or so. Sure hate I lost the dad one of my top Ruby cocks. I have a nice son off him from last year so I'll be fine.
