Well, the nice, sunny, 50 degree weather gave me the itch to let the team out for the first time after a 5 month lock down for winter, so out they went this morning. They didn't do too bad, most of them flew 7 minutes with a couple breaks, and about 7 stronger birds stayed up for 12 minutes, and only had 5 different birds bump either going out or coming in. Had a bunch of deep individual rolls, but sloppy compared to when they are in shape. No hawks to be seen, so that's always a good thing. LOL.

Just like every spring, I'm reinvigorated and excited about the new flying season ahead of me. I'm hoping to get my first round out this weekend. I started breeding early this year, and they should have been out a couple weeks ago. I'm already banding my second round in the nest, and the 3rd round is being laid.

I flew two kits today for the first time since around December 15th without any incident whatsoever. I am in Michigan in a southern suburb of Grand Rapids, Michigan, where we had an extremely light winter (less than 40 inches of snow) and today the temperature was well into the 60's with lots of sun and very little wind. It was kinda fun watching and tending the birds in a t-shirt instead of a snowmobile suit:-).

Been flying 2 kits since last weekend. everyday for the last 5 days straight. 17 birds cocks 16 birds hens. two kits 33 birds 20 late aug 2009 hatches and 13 2008 and 2009 holdovers from last year. No hawks at all thank God. I have 7 more late august 2009 hatches to get up tomorrow and this weekend i will start training the first round of 19~ 2010 youngsters that will be 8 and nine weeks this weekend. hopefully i can get them going in a week or so that will give me almost 3 kits to work with. My second round of 2010 hatches should be up in the air in about 5 more weeks which will who don't. I'm in it for the long haul and just glad to be able to get them back up in the air without the hawks slowing up progress. I usually fly from Mid March until End of October before I have to lock them up.

Dave Glad to hear that you flew with no problems. I tested the skys yesterday and flew some 09 young birds. The first kit i lost 2 to bops. the second kit flew and did ok. I guess the bops had enough to eat. So i'm still locked down. I looks like another year of looseing birds. I will pair birds up in a week or so. I hope i can get my A and B teams back in the air the first of april. It seems like its getting worse every year. The hobby we have if your not thick skinned then its better to not fly. Well, I just got my first round of 13 babies out today. They should have been out a few weeks ago, they're not even peeping anymore, so I knew that they would be strong on the wing. Of course not even one of them landed on the loft, they all took off all over the place. It's amazing how smart they are though, they kept coming back around my back yard, and about 5 minutes later, 2 of them landed on the loft, and within 20 minutes, every last one of them came out of nowhere one at a time and landed on the loft also. I fly my babies hungry, so all it took was a sprinkle of seed on the landing board, a whistle, and follow the leader they all came down on the board and trapped in one after the other. 13 out, 13 in, no hawks to be seen, another beautiful day in paradise!

Im jealous Dave. Went to try and fly portable today. Hawks flood the skies. Had a cooper take a pass at two birds, but it gave up the hunt quickly. Yet I some how lost one bird, and it wasnt any that the hawk went after. Still frustrating.
