I have heard that they both can. I have also heard from honest fliers that the BOP can and have caught both these breeds. I have heard from some fliers that Dewlaps can out run BOP. I have also heard from some honest fliers that BOP can and do catch them.

Hi I raise Doneks and I can tell you, the cooper hawks love the taste of Donek, The coopers will have them as soon as they are released or when they start to come down, I have had Doneks taken right off the roof of my loft, Hope that helps your decision. If you are looking for a bird to out fly the hawks, go with Catalonia

A friend of mine, Eldon Cheney, told me that the BOP takes his Catalonians pretty regularly

NO BIRD-I repeat-no bird is hawk proof, the orientals-donecks-cats they all CAN outfly the hawk! BUT the most are taken when first let out or mostly when landing!

Pat is right most of the birds can outfly the hawk but the hawk waits for them and ambushes them.

Most the times the birds dont know what hit them until its too late.

Yes of course nothing is BOP proof. I actually don't have any big hawks problem but very little cooper and mostly falcon in the fall. I probably won't have to worry about birds being taken off the roof but in the sky. Would you think donek and catalonian would be good for falcons.

I totally agree with Pat66 no bird is safe from the BOP unless you can train doves to fly and trap, but check out this web site on Cats it may help out, possibly.

Yang!
I have a few Orientals, one of my Husband strain hens has out flown Coopers and Sharp Shins on 5 separate occasions, on two of these she turned and flew straight down the hawks nose, really messed with his head. If the OR's can see the BOP approaching I think they can pretty well hold their own but if the hawk comes up out of the trees as the birds are let out of the box or as they are coming down to trap the hawk definitely will catch them. The longer they are on the box roof the more the chance the hawk will catch them. The only time I have trouble with the Red Tails is when birds take too long to trap and are on the roof exposed too long. Get em up, fly the time, get em down and trapped!
None of them are Hawk Proof!

I flew Cats all winter this past year. My set up and location isn't very condusive to ambush attacks so any accipiter has to give chase here. I've seen the cats chased by coopers many times, but they never got one. I lost more to the freeway cars than I did the predators. They are weird birds, but they are fast when they need to be. I have some portuguese tumblers I am starting to fly. They will be tested this fall. They are lightening fast. They are very difficult to try and catch in the loft. I've had and have many different breeds of pigeons, but I've never seen any breed that can bolt as fast as these PTs can.

I agree with the Snake too. I live in Ohio and have rollers and Orientals too. As of yet (2yrs) I have never lost an adult Oriental to any type of BOP. But on the other hand I have lost several of my rollers to the BOP. I fly a kit of Orientals first, then fly the rollers. The BOP around me now don't even bother my rollers anymore. The Orientals have many many more aerial manuvers then the rollers. The Orientals remind me of a fighter plane. Being able to pull out of a straight down dive or do barrel rolls and make a 90 degree turn right or left in mid air. You have to see them in person to get the real affect they have and what they can do.. Nothing like a roller flies...

Thanks for all your position encouraging answers. I know nothing is BOP free but I just don't understand how some people like to give negative answer all the time when someone is looking for positive answers. Atleast when you give a negative answer, give a positive too because there is one. As I was reading this thread as it was coming along I felt like getting some and then not and then getting them again, back and forth. LOL Its like this folks, I have a glass of water fill half way and I would like you to give me a description of it. The negative people would say its half "EMPTY" and the positive people would say its half "FULL".

I have raised doneks now two years now and never lost one to a hawk but I don't get but a few hawks a year. I have had them chase the doneks a few times. One time was when a donek was landing and a hawk jumped out of the trees and almost got him but the donek lost the hawk like it was nothing I don't know how the hawk was just inches away, I counted him as a lost. I think if it was a month earlier when the doneks were still fat he would have got him. I'm not saying a hawk cant get a donek I know it is just a matter of time be for I lose one to a hawk.
