Hi, I have a one year old hen that has layed one egg. Now she is acting like she can't walk and is pooping stinking green poop. She doesn't want to eat or drink. Could she be egg bound? If so is there anything I can do to help her.?
What else might it be and how should I treat it.? thank you very much for your help. I am lost Fred

My guess is paratyphoid, coccidiosis or eggbound. I would google these and read up. It is the best way to learn for yourself..

Good post Ralph... I have used cod liver oil and then moved the membrane awayfrom the egg.I then use a 16 penny nail to break the egg. If you are careful you can remove most of the shell with a tweezer. She will then pass the rest herself...

i had a hen last year that was egg bound,i tried pushing the egg out but coudnt, tried to move the membrane but couldnt.i broke the egg in her and she passed the remains in a few days.

ten days later she laid again same thing the bird was no good for laying and was too far gone to make it this time.i say dont breed her after this, she wont even be in good shape to sit on the egg she did lay

Fred The hen is calcium defiecent. Its probably to late for her now, but go to the wallmart and buy 600 mg calcium with vit D just get the generic brand. there big pills. break one in half and wet it and slide in down her throat, you can give her both halfs i would she sounds like she in pretty bad shape. The reason she can't lay the second egg is because she is to weak from laying the first egg. Get you some oyster shell and mix it in with your grit. Some of the this grit there selling now looks good but theres no calcium in some of it. If she hasn't lay her second egg yet and her vent is real crappy feel the vent and the egg should be right there. I take a bucket of nice warm water and hold the hen in it for a little while and then gently pull back on her vent and normally the egg will pop right out. Be carefull though try not to break it. But the first thing you do is give her the calcium pill. I've seen hens that were like yours and couldn't walk or fly and just lay on the floor, I've given them the calcium pill and with in hours the hen is up walking and flying. Heres and old old thing a guy told me back in the 50s. Gently pull the tail feathers, Don't ask me why but for some reason a sick bird will start doing better. I can see it now all the flak i'm going to get from that lmao. I've done it for years and it works. Fred i see the instructions for egg bound hens is posted above. Follow those. The hen has probably got a rough shelled egg and you will need to use a lubricant. Jim Bowen

When the poop is green, it is more serious than calcium deficient of egg bound. Put her on 4 n 1 meds for 10 days. Do you have rodents in your loft roam around at night!! If you don’t know, examine it. It is that important to keep your loft rodent free.

hello fred i would do what jay says if you give them 4n1 make sure you take the grit out. if you leave the grit in for them to eat. the 4n1 will not work like it should. the calcium in the grit will bind up with the 4 n 1 and set in there crop. hope that help you out.

Jay It would be good to start the bird on four and one but the problem is I think that the bird is weak from lack of calcium. Shes to weak to lay the second egg so the poop is seeping out around the egg and out makeing a mess. If it was my bird I would use the calcium first and try to get the bird to lay or get the egg out. The problem is she is weak and eggbound. Also when using any meds don't use city water us distilled water. Jim

Fred,
A sick bird is a liability to your whole operation. Sickness can spread quickly to your other birds. Cull it and take it to the vet for analysis.

Sorry to bring up an old post

Has any body used different types of oil? Like olive oil? For a egg-bound hen?

This thread is a year old. I want to know what did Fred finally do to help the hen? Fred, you out there? What did you do? Did the hen live or die?
