I use the crown system individual breeding pens, stacked 2 high on a 16 foot shelf along the back wall. works better than anything I have used before. Have 12 pair together now and 10 two week old squabs in the nest. Temp got to -2F Sunday night but squabs are doing fine.

Thanks guys, It is my dream loft also. Still have a few things to do like cement walkways in front after the spring thaw. Right now it is packed snow and ice in front of the building. I had a company come out and put up the basic building and then I did all the interior work myself. They put the building up in one day, took me 3 weeks to finsih the interior and paint it. Joe

Efren, the building is 12'X32' but I am only using 24' of it. The rest is storage now but may used for expansion in the future, Joe

I designed it to be easy to keep clean and to be able to stand in one place with my cigar and 3 fingers of scotch and see all of my birds without moving. I'm getting lazy in my advanced age!! Joe

Jim, I didn't make them, I bought them from Foy's last year. They are really slick. All plastic, easy to scrape and the blue plastic slats slide off so I soak them in water and Clorox every few months to disinfect them. Went up on Foy's site to order some more and they don't have them listed anymore. Joe
PS, I just sent you an email reply to your message last week.

That's an incredibly awesome set-up you have there Sunflower.

W.H. Pensom would have probably admired such a loft as I do myself today. Lot's of ideas are coming to mind right now on how to proceed with the architectural engineering (the design) of my next loft and kitboxes.

Good morning Joe...

QUESTION: Roughly how much did it cost you to make such a beautiful home for your birds?

Marcus,
I really didn't keep track but I would guess between $9 and $10K. My wife likes to tell our friends that I'm so nuts that I spent $10K for a pigeon loft.

Your wife says $10K on pigeons is nuts ehh....

Keep in mind Joe that what you are doing is historical. The preservation of the roller pigeon breed as an aerial performer must be maintained by intelligent breeders and flyers.... or else.... the breed as we know it today can some day become extinct.

Let us not forget that the original habitat where tumbling pigeons originally reared their offspring and were 1st discovered in the wild (certain parts of Asia) has now been developed by human beings in order to breed and raise their offspring.

The roller pigeon is a domesticated breed derived from tumblers and has become totally dependent upon man for its survival. Preservation of the roller is a good thing in my opinion.
