Hey Lipper, what you call protecting is called trapping by law enforcement and is against the MBTA. HUGE fines and jail time await those who violate it.

Read up on Operation High Roller and find out how many roller men were arrested and fined thousands of dollars. Enjoy your birds.

Mike, there were several guys busted a while back for doing just what you posted among other things to protect their birds so it's best not to say things like that on here so the bleedin' hearts can't tar all of us with the same brush.Personally,I don't think that approach is right because everyone can't do that so it makes for an unfair playing field, plus, you'll never stay ahead of the SOB BOP.Fly around 'em.

Wow..I just got done reading all of this stuff about BOP's. There is no way in my opinion these guys could catch that many BOP..I am glad I live in the flat farming area I do, the only trees for miles are in your own yard. In the 80's in Minnesota, I would get an occasional problem BOP, once had a pergrine hit my breeders flypen and kill itself. This bird had a band on it, and I think it was part of some program they had in the cities. I have had folks with the Iowa DNR tell me that they are playing havoc with pheasants and song birds. Maybe you guys will get some help with controlling BOP numbers before to long...I did have a pair of sparrow hawks that nested in the eaves of my house a couple of years ago, that were grabbing golfinches off my bird feeders. I put a plastic owl by where they were nesting, and they left. I did not realize how big this problem has become......

Mike............years ago we didn't have such a problem.
But with all the bleeding hearts out their and the endangered species enforcement. All brought on by us screwing with the circle of life. Not allowing the natural preditors to do their thing.

Occasionally, we have a cooper problem, now we have peregrines in the area, damn it! Coopers are a lot more cunning and fly below the radar. They're persistent buggers too. In late winter & early spring I get harassed by bald eagles once in a while as well. I lost my prize hen to an eagle four years ago. I didn't think that eagles would come after pigeons. I'm glad that the golden eagles in our area stay away from town because I'm sure they would be hell to put up with! I can't imagine how anyone could keep at this hobby in So. Cal with all of the BOP out there. Hats off to you guys over there!

Just let the BOP's be... it's all about survival of the fittest and part of the food chain.

Hawks are not endangered species anymore. In fact their population had increased beyond what scientists expected. They are nevertheless protected species. Here in California we feed those BOP with our pigeons (involuntarily!). I think the government should thanks us for helping these birds to survive extinction. In fact today I saw this really fat hawk. I thank my opportunity again to look at the sky (scan) that I didn't release my birds today when I had planned it.

Glad we were able to help get you up to speed, save a few bop for the environment and save you some time and money. Could have been an expensive lesson. ;-)
