I hate 1/2 x 1/2 wire for the floors! It collects poop to bad! Mine all have it! That will be one of the first things that I change on the next set that I build! I am goona use something bigger such as 1 x 1", at least 1/2 x 1"! JMO

quickspin has it right, the only exception would be the lower boxes are hard on the back when you are an oldfart.
Cold weather also is a consideration. The lower boxes are drafty even in the most well heated loft.

It's easier to clean I use sawdust on the bottom and keeps it warm. I have wire floor on the kit cages and are 1/4"x1/4" and the droping get stuck I will have to fix that soon. I will either put wood floor or 1"1" wire floor.

2 bowls in each pen right? is it better to have the second bowl on a higher level or does that matter?

I prefer higher because the youngster once they start to walk will bother the parents on the new eggs...

I agreed on making it higher it's true they bother them. I just couldn't make it higher because then I would of use less instead of the 4 individual on top of each other.

I didn't wanted it to be taller than the wall in the back.

I have some individual breeding pens, but I am seriously thinking about purchasing an 8 pair Crown Breeder Compartment from Tony.

The 8 pair breeding compartment has wired floors (for easy cleaning) and is on wheels which gives me several mobility options. Here at Deep Spin Lofts I am always moving cages, pens and kitboxes around because practically everything I keep pigeons in is on wheels set in diecast steel.

Hmmm...

It might cost me a little bit more to get the breeder compartment from Tony than say building an 8 pair breeding pen, but I will definitely have the opportunity to save precious time+energy by spending a little extra monetarily.

{P.S.} Something I have realized more and more since I turned 40... was that I often need to save precious time & energy!

I'm in compton, I believe my floors for 3 pens will measure a total of 60" long by 24" deep and i'll use some of my 1/2 x 1/2 for the front. so I think i'll do each pen 20" long x 24" deep and maybe 20" tall, are these nice dimensions ?

French, what you described above I would not want any smaller, the bigger the better.
1/2 in wire is useless as it clogs, any bigger and mating is a problem, myself I want a solid floor, but one that is easy to clean which mine are not.

ya know one thing wish I had done on my first one is to build my boxes seperately so I could reconfigure without a major overhaul. Just a thought, and you can buy mdf already ripped to 11 1/4. one stick builds a 12x12x24 breeder box sans front
