I enjoyed seeing your rollers and loft setup but the size of the wire is of consern. It should be half that size so a cat or hawk or anyother animal cant get a hold of them. A dog would be very benificial to guard the property and chase away all trouble makers. The size of the wire looks good but isnt small enought to protect your vauable pigeons. I know from experiance because some of my birds were killed by a cat nearly fifty years ago. Wish you luck, Ray

Oye!!,MRConductor,
Welcome to a fine website.Your loft looks good I guess you don't get much rain where you live cause if you do it will blow inside onto the floor and wet is not good with birds. If you raise the water fount off the floor a few inches and put a little roof over it,there will be less shit and feathers landing in the water. Those bullet founts that Tony has in his store here are good as the birds won't sit on them as much as the flat top kind of fount.
When you build something more permanent a flypen is a must for one reason it's the place where they can have a bathpan and not wet the loft floor with their splashing.
1/2X1" wire is the biggest you should go for outside walls or floors.Even 1/2X1/2" is not too small.Hawks can grab them through what you have there.
Good Luck!!

Welcome Ed B, Very nice looking birds, I'm with Ray and the others on the wire. My sister built her a chicken pen with that kind of wire. A coon chewed a hole through it the first week and killed a bunch of her chickens. I'm not trying to pick fault. Just save you a heart ache. And the first time your gone to town or some were it will rain and blow. Then you'll have a mess. The last thing you want is a damp wet loft. I see you do nice work so you'll have to varmit proof it. And water proof it. With fly pens. Like they said at least 1 in. square wire. A small weasel can go through 1 in. square hole. If your in an aera they travel. I have 1 in. on my kit box floors but I'm in an open area no ditches or creeks. But one can always show up!!! Knock on wood!!! Keep up the good work and enjoy your fine family of rollers! PS, another bad one is a mink some female mink are small and anywere they can poke there head in there body can fit. Weasels and mink kill all they can. They go into a killing frenzie. My Dad had a mink get in his chicken coop and kill 67 chickens. Dad and my two brothers picked chickens for a whole day!! Take care, Kim Tappenden

Thanks for the tips guys! Your right about the wire, on my permanent loft I'll be using 1/4 X 1/4 hardware cloth. This loft was originally a goat holding pen, my friend gave me the birds so I needed some place to put them really fast!

As far as rain goes I live in the desert near victorville ca we have very little rain but this weekend we are expecting a big storm so the loft is completly covered up minus some openings for cross ventilation. I'm using woodstove pellets for the floor, they do a great job obsorbing moisture. I've been using these pellets for years in the bottom of my other birds aviary's.

As far as the waterer goes it's just temporary, I bought it today and I'm going to use it for medications ACV ect. I'm building an automatic waterer that is self cleaning I should have it done in a few days and I'll post some pictures of it.

What kind of feeders are you using? These birds make a big mess with thier pellets, they throw them everywhere!

As far as the birds without bands my friend raised them and didn't band them, I'm going to band them with my contact info.

Tapp, I don't think we have weasels or minks but we do have snakes! Rattlers king snakes and such and I do worry about them! I will definitly be replacing the wire as soon as I can. I might just plywood up the back and sides and just get new wire for the front that would probably be cheaper what do you think?

Thanks,

Ed.

1/4" wire is a little fine.Shit won't pass through it and will build up on the floor.

looks like you have a great start there Ed.
I bet your having a good time.
As time goes on you will get to see what other people are building
that will give you ideas for your permanent loft.
That looks like it will work for you till then.

Here is some photos of my 16 hole breeding pen before all my birds crapped all over them...lol

I have the same waterers and if you cut a gallon milk jug in half and slip the top half over your waterers it will keep the birds from sitting on them, also I put my waterers on cement blocks, really helps. Pat66

Kelly,
I have used it for storing water & feed containers
when I lock pairs in there pens to pair them up.
I have also stored nest bowls & pine needles down there.
It has worked out well.
I bred 105 birds out of that setup this year.

As always, your stuff is always very nice! It shows you put a lot of time and thought in you work! Very funcionable too! Great example for the rest of us!

Does your sky light produce much heat in the winter? Just curious!

Val,
My loft is built between two garages. The split up pens get sunlight on a daily bases. The breeding pen gets indirect sunlight.
Thats why I put in the skylight. Its just nice to have there all year round.
Where I live the temps in the winter are on average.... lows 45 to 55...highs..60 to 75..
The skylight provides extra sunlight making the breeding pen well lit.
When Im breeding I open one of my breakup pens so that the breeders have that extra room
to fly back and forth as well as being able to sit in the sun during the day as you will be able to see in this next photo.
